MEETINGS

PLTJNKET SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of tihe Greymouth branch of the Plunket Society, held yesterday afternoon, was attended by .Mesdames H. C. Garde (in the chair), T. Seddon, 0. McLean, D. M. Robertson, A. H. Wilde, J. O’Brien, Aiderton, F. A. Kitchingham, " 11 (president of the Runanga SubBranch), F. H. Denton (secretary), and Miss M. Anderson. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames F. M. Dennehy (president), Mpore, Schaef, Greenslade, Carter, McLean, and Forbes. Reference to the death of Mr 1. Campbell, brother of Airs Dennehy, was made by Mrs Garde, and a motion of condolence to Mrs Dennehy was carried in silence. The amount of £6O, which has been raised by the Runanga Sub-Branch, was handed over to the Society by Mrs King, who stated that the donation was made with great pleasure. Members expressed gratification at the splendid result, more especially as the sub-branch was formed only in March last. The wonderful result spoke well for the enthusiasm of the ladies of tlhe Runanga district. Accounts totalling £6O 19s were passed for payment. A donation of £2 10s was received from the Cobden Town Board, and it was decided to send a letter of thanks to the Board. Nurse Spring reported as follows for the past month Visits to homes, new cases 12, old cases 134; visits to office, adults 247, babies 141, older children 75; total 463. Out-stations : Visits to homes, new cases 11, old cases 98; visits to office, adults 28, babies 23, older children 7; total 58. During the month, .the following places were visited: Hokitika, Runanga, Reefton. Blackball, Kumara, Stillwater, Dobson, Brunner, Gladstone, and Waiuta. The report was adopted. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Garde for presiding. HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Oar Own Correßpondent.)

HOKITIKA, November 10. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening; Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs E. W. Heenan, T. W. Duff, A. R. Elcock, A. C. Armstrong, G. Heinz, Jas. King, E. Teichelmann, D. J. Evans. An apology was received for the absence of Cr Jeffries. From the members of the family of the late Mr A. A. Andrews, acknowledging motion of sympathy. —Recoivcd. The District Traffic Manager, Railways, Christchurch, wrote intimating that the Department had decided to instal warning devices at all dangerous crossings as funds are available, and installations would be made in order of urgency. Park Street installation cannot be done for some time, but Hampden Street crossing will receive first consideration. —A letter to be sent to the Traffic Manager stating that Park Street should be attended first. , 3 From T. E. Y. Seddon acknowledging Council’s resolution re Kumara Junction-Flowery Creek Road, and intimating that the matter would receive his early and very favourable attention. —Received. The Engineer-in-Chief, Public Works Department, Wellington, wrote intimating (1) that owners of heavy motoi’ vehicles had instituted a movement to induce the Government to discontinue regulations authorising local authorities to charge heavy traffic license fees, and that a conference would be held early in the New Year to have the matter properly considered; also asking for any information which may be available, as to conclusion of Council or staff respecting the damage caused to road by heavy vehicles, and whether it is greater than that which would be caused by a number of ordinary motor cars using the same amount of petrol; also asking whether any heaviei- class of construction has been adopted than would have been adopted had there been no vehicles, with a laden weight in excess of any three tons. —Referred to special committee, consisting of the Mayor, Cr Evans and Clerk. The Secretary, Greymouth Waterside Workers’ Industrial Union applied for the use of Cass Square on Saturday, January 26, 1929, for the purposes of their annual -picnic, and asking for the sole rights of Square on that date, in order that the Picnic Committee shall have authority to determine which vendors shall be admitted to the Square on that date. Granted, under usual conditions. The Superintendent, National Provident Fund, wrote forwarding particulars of superannuation system for employees of local authorities. —Town Clerk to report at next meeting. Mr W. J. Butler, Stafford Street, wrote asking the cost per chain of tar sealing that part of Stafford Street near. its intersection with Brittan Street. Information is sought with the possibility of arranging with the Council to abate the dust nuisance in that area. —Information to be supplied. The Chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, Greymouth, wrote intimating that through Main Highways Amendment Act, 1928, that basic rate of subsidy for maintenance on highways through boroughs is increased to £2 for pound (that is from 3/5 to 2/3), and to be retrospective from the Ist April, 1928. —Considered satisfactory. ~ The Health Inspector, Greymouth, forwarded report of work performed in Hokitika Borough for month of October 1928. Messrs J. Mandi and Co. Ltd., and three other ratepayers, wrote drawingattention to the unsatisfactory condition of the channel and water table on the western side of Fitzherbert Street, between Stafford and Hampden Streets, and pointing out that there is no provision for storm water running away during heavy rain.—Work to be scheduled. The matter of channelling or kerbing Fitzherbert Street from the cemetery was referred to the P.W. Committee to report on.

The Secretary, Westland Racing Club wrote intimating that in regard to water supply at the Racecourse, the Club is prepared to pay £5O towards the cost of material, and will supply the caretaker to assist with labour, if the Council will undertake the work. The Borough Foreman estimated the work at £5O for material and £l5 for labour—Offer accepted. The Sanitary Inspector, Greymouth, notified a case of diphtheria in Davis Street, and directing notice to be served on owner of the property to carry out certain improvements. The Chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, Greymouth, wrote forwarding instructions respecting the selecting and shipping of samples of tar and bitumous materials, which are

to be tested in the laboratory for conformity with approved specifications. From ratepayers in Upper Rolleston Street, requesting that the drain be deepened to Park Street to allow of storm water to get away.—Referred to P.W. Committee to report. J. Cameron wrote asking the Council to put in a short drain across Sewell Street—Referred to P.W. Committee to report. The Abattoir’s Manager reported animals slaughtered during October:—B cows, 27 heifers, 75 bullocks, 157 sheep, 5 lambs, 11 pigs, 4 calves. Condemned, 1 cow, 1 sheep, 1 pig. Fees received £57/14/6. Corresponding month last year £54/4/6. A report was received on the laying of pipes on Cass Square for Fire Brigade purposes and it was resolved to refer the matter to the Fire Brigade and if approved to proceed with the work. ■ . , The Treasurer reported receipts £761/15/2; payments £591/11/7; Credit balance £740/17/4; On fixed deposit for three months £l2OO. Accounts amounting to £1315/18/1 were passed for payment. Cr Evans referred to some requirements at the Public Library. It was resolved that these be attended to. Cr Heenan- suggested that more casual labour be put on to clean up. He suggested that two men be put on. The matter was left with the P.W. Committee.
