THE TROTTING DESCRIBED. (Special to '‘Star.”) CHRISTCHURCH, November 9. The New Zealand Metropolitan ' Trotting Club’s meeting Wmipatted to-day, < and though the fields were small there was no lack of interest in the racing. With almost a perfect track, every event was run atahign ; rate of speed, and most of the placed horses will have a task to reproduce their form when they come to race on a slower course. Cardinal Logan, who was sent out favourite for the Christchurch. Handi'cap, spoilt his chance by going to a bad break just after the"start. Vesuvius set a solid pace, and with threeparts of the journey gone he was well clear'-of Talaro, Kohara, Jewel Pointer •and Waitaki Girl. It was not till the 'field had straightened up for the run •hofiie that Vesuvius lost his place to Talaro, Kohara and "Waitaki Girl. Finishing particularly Well, Talaro got the verdict by a length from Jack Potts, whp was a. neck in front of Waitaki Girl. After being slow to begin, and having all th® worst of the running, Jack Potts put pp such a great race as to suggest that under inore favourable conditions he may have won. Jewel Poihter went such a splid first mile as to leave him without a finishing effort, and it is evident that he has gone

off. , Despite her unsatisfactory showing on Thursday, Nourmahal was made a much better favourite than Nelson Boy and Nelson McKinney for the Governor’s Handicap. After an interesting radp Nelson Bpy just lasted long enough to win by a neck from Young Carbine, with Sarsaparilla and Lady Fan only peeks away. It was a solidly run face, as each of the placefillers knocked Over three seconds off their handicapsBetting was well distributed ip the Enfield Handicap, Tpr though Jean McElwyn woUnfi pp favourite, there was almost as much money for Auguste Diljop, Fight Ever and Golden Devon. After Darknite and General Bingen had showed out In ffopt for half the journey, Auguste Dillon headed them when it cafiie to the rpn home. The last-named tired apd General Bingen got up in tim6 to defeat him py a heck. Close UP came Jean McElwyn, with Bopny Logan, who got a bad passage fourth.Bpnkhead, who was made a stropg order for the Australasian Handicap, spoilt his chance by breaking up badly just after the start. Mac Dillon acted as pacemaker all through the first milb from Invader and Dundas Boy. When Dundas Boy took Mac Dillon’s measure three furlongs from home he looked almost a certain winner. Under pressure he tired ppd Invader, who had gone a patchy race, got up in time to heat him by half a length. The winper went just under 4secs. of his handicap, which gave the back mark? ers a severe task.

Sister Beatrice and Kepipton were (made the elect of bickers for the Alid'dletpn Handicap, while Maxegin, who went very scratchy ip his preliminary, wound up fourth choice. After starring off brilliantly, Maxegin went to a bad break at the end of two furlongs, but still had sufficient pace to be the leaders all through the 'second circuit. Without beiqg called on for a serious effort, Maxegin just stroked home two lengths clear of Elzeaf, who went a very solid race. Sistpr Beatrice went well for threeparts of the journey and then stopped badly. Well handicapped in the Hornby Pageant was made a much 'better favourite than Quality and Lady Matchlight. After setting a ■solid pace from the start, Avenger and Sahfb dropped out in the back straight, and'as they started the run home, 'WilHam the Great, Jolly Chimes and Pagpant all looked to have winning chahces. Coiqiflg op the outside of his field - with A desperate finishing effort, Pageant just got the verdict py a neck from Jolly Chimes, who n#de his chance hard by ah early break. Pageant is one of the most improved green horses seen put this season, and has always been favourably treated. After bein£ badly placed in the early etagps of the Lyttplton Handicap, Acre turned on such a torrent of speed over the last two furlpngs as to land him a winner by half a length from Mate O’Mihe. The latter looked like scoring As the home straight was entered, where Genuine and Glide Away were ajso handy. There was a lot of interference during the Mee, the chief

sufferers from which were Orphan, Rebel, Jolly Pet and Event. On her showing in this race Glide Away will be worth keeping in mind for future engagements. WINTON JOCKEY CLUB.
