BOROUGH COUNCIL.

(Our Own Oorreai>cin<iet>.t-.)

HOKITIKA, October 13. The Borough Council met last evening. Present:'The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs J. King, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, W. Jeffries, G. Heinz, E. W. Heenan, Dr Teichelmann. An apology was received for the absence of Cr Armstrong. ■ The Secretary, Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade, wrote intimating that the United Fire Brigade Demonstration would be held at Hokitika about February 26 next, and asking, (1) for the use of Cass Square for three days for the purpose of holding the demonstration, and (2) to replace the fire plug in the centre of the Square, and to extend the pipe line as was done at the last Fire Brigade Demonstration held in Hokitika.

Respecting the constructing of a

line of pipes, the Mayor said the Council must take care that the water hammer during the demonstration does not seriously damage the water mains. Cr Heinz suggested that to obviate the hydraulic hammer the pipe line be constructed right through Cass Square and join up with the pipe line in Weld Street.

Cr Evans moved that the request be granted, subject to the pipes being put in to the satisfaction of the P.W. Committee. Seconded by Cr Jeffries, who said the Council should offer every facility to make the event a success. The motion was put and carried.

From Messrs N. O. Fairlie and C. L. P. Renton, pointing out that there was no access for vehicles to their properties at the top of Rolleston Street, near Park Street, and asking that better loading facilities be provided.—Received, P.W. Committee to report. From Municipal Association of New Zealand, intimating that the next conference of delegates will be held at Wanganui on the first week in March, 1929, and advising that all remits for inclusion in the Order Paper must be in the Acting-Secretary’s hands not later than December 1 next. —Received. From Mrs I. L. Perry, Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, Hokitika Branch of the Plunket. Society, thanking the Council for the welcome donation to the funds of the Society.—Received. From the Director of Forestry, Wellington, intimating that the Empire Forestry Delegates (between 60 and 70 persons) would arrive in Hokitika at 6.30 p.m. on Thursday, the 11th instant, and proceed south as far as Waiho next morning, arriving at Greymouth at 6.25 that evening.—Received.

Linklater, pointing out the danger caused by Borough carters and other carters removing sand from opposite his residence in Park and North Revell Streets. —Received. Cr Jeffries agreed with the writer of the letter. Taking away the sand left an opening for the waves to come through in rough weather. This happened on the day Mr Linklater wrote his letter. Cr Jeffries moved that notices be posted warning people against removing sand from the right of way by Cr Heinz and carried.

D. J. Evans, Esq., County Clerk, Hokitika, wrote pointing out that the damage on Slip Hill was primarily caused through the leakage of the Borough Water Supply Pipes, and asking the Council to pay ££7/7/0, half the cost of repairing the road. — Received.

On being questioned, the Overseer (Mr F. Chesterman) said he considered it was the weather which caused the slip and not any leakages from the Borough pipes. The slips caused the pipes to sag. It was resolved to pay half the cost as requested. From J. B.
