NELSON EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was Jield on Monday last at Nelson. Mr J. H. Harkness was excused from attendance owing to the death of his brother, Mr G. A. Harkness, late Senior Inspector.

The financial statement and the Agricultural Instructor’s report were received.

Tenders. —The following tenders were received : —Anatimo, new school, A. E. .Gooch, £249 10/; Terakohe, new school, A. E. Gooch, £605; Herekeke, removal of school from Kikawa, Fawcett and. Butler, £lOB 10/; Burnett’s Face, new convenience, C. Costelloe, £72 10/;. ilnangahua Junction, clearing school site, F- Harvey, £52 10/. The following grants were authorised :—Churchill, draining school grounds, £10; Dovedale, glass case to store collections for nature study, £6 ; Hampden Street, towards erection of shelter shed, £3O: Kotings, towards erection bicycle shed, £5; Nelson Central. sundry repairs £4 10/; Reef ton, footpath from main school to Science Room, £10; Richmond, grant towards incidental expenses £6; Central Takaka, towards concreting path, £10; Lower Takaka, sundry repairs, £47; Burnett’s Face, fencing at school residence, £57 10/. The application of Ikamatua for the erection of coal and bicycle sheds was referred to Messrs Smith a.nd Scantlebury, - who will be visiting the Coast shortly, likewise the application from the residents of Hukarere for a new school in their district.

Brightwater. —The Department regretted that as there are so many proposals for actual school accommodation requiring attention, the proposal io rebuild the teacher’s residence must bo postponed for the present. The Board consented to the transfer of lease of section 51, Murchison, from the New Zealand Fanners’ Co-opera-tive Association of Canterbury to Thomas Hubert Lee.

The Architect reported on the cost of,improving the dental clinic at Westport.—On the motion of the Hon. Mr Mclntyre it was decided to advise the Committee it recommends the improvements being effected in preference to the erection of a new clinic.

The Department notified that the number of probationers to be appointed for 1928 will be twenty-two, and that all probationers who have served their term will be admitted to the Training College for 1929; also authorising iihe establishment of a seventh standard in the Murchison School.

Appointment of Teachers. —Miss Jordan, sole teacher, Grade I (halftime schools, 6 days a week) —Miss N. E. Smith, sole teacher Grade 0, Winns’ Valley. Mr R. Irwin was appointed temporarily head teacher of Granity School.

Resignations—-M. L. Larsen, assistant teacher, 'Westport; E. S. Lorking, head teacher, Granity; A. T. Somerville, head teacher Ngatomoti; E. M. Williams, assistant teacher, Reefton.

COBDEN SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Cobden School Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs J. Mead (Chairman), A. Gunn, (Sec.), A. Turley, J. Scorgie, F. Rowe, Mesdames Sexton, and Gilmour.

The Buller Electoral Officer wrote notifying that the school would be required for the forthcoming general election.

Accounts amounting to 18/- were passed for payment. The Headmaster’s report was read and received and various requirements noted.

It was decided to approach the Board’s Architect to report on the Committee’s scheme for asphalting a portion of the playground.
