FRANCE AND ITALY
WAR MINISTER’S STATEMENT.
(Australian Press Association.) (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.)
(Recd. October 3, 10 a.m.) PARIS, October 2.
“With Italian neighbours hastening fortification on their frontier v it is only common sense that we keep up with them,” declared the War Minister (M. Painleve), in the course of a striding interview with the British United Press.
“Italy began the race all the way from the Mediterranean to Mont Blanc. We will match them gun for gun. It is easier to defend than our German frontier. We realise the consequences of failure to keep up with Italy.”
ft is explained that many passes are defended by the eternal snows, the remainder being made to bristle with guns costing millions of pounds.
