GENERAL ELECTIONS
KAIAPOI DISSATISFACTION.
(Special to "Star.")
CHRISTCHURCH, October 1
Considerable dissatisfaction exists among the supporters of the Reform Party in the Kaiapoi electorate regarding the selection of Mr J. A. Flesher as the party’s candidate for the seat at the coming election. The selection of Mr Flesher came as a surprise to many Reformers in the electorate, who considered that the choice was certain to fall on Mr J. W. Beanland. There is now some talk of bringing out an Independent candidate who would prove acceptable to the discontented section.
The licensing issue is also likely to have a bearing on the question. The three candidates now in the field are all prohibitionists, and the anti-prohi-bition section of the electors desire a candidate reflecting their views on the licensing question.
PAHIATUA ELECTORATE
WOODVILLE, October 2
A large and enthusiastic meeting of United Party supporters, representative of the three centres of the electorate, was held at Woodville last night. Mr. Ransom M.P. gave a resume of the history of the Party, and the conference of party candidates recently held at Wellington. A resolution was unanimously passed of confidence in the Party and in Sir Joseph Ward. Mr. Ransom was congratulated on being appointed deputy leader for the North Island.
An enthusiastic meeting of Reform supporters appointed a strong committee and executive and passed a resolution of congratulations to Mr. G. Harold Smith on his appointment as pfflcial candidate. They pledged themselves to do all they could to further his candidature, and also expressed confidence in Mr. Coates.
