GALES IN EUROPE
GREAT DAMAGE IN BELGIUM WAR-COUNTRY INUNDATED * (Australian Press Association.) (By Cable-Press Assn.-Copyright.) (Recd. October 2,2 p.m.) LONDON, October 1. Terrific North Sea gales played havoc on the Belgian coast, smashing sluices at Nieuport, the floods spreading over the famous battlefield, the same country which was inundated by the Belgians in 1914, to save the army. A pier at Zeebrugge was breached by the storm, thus repeating the British submarine epic in 1918. Floods isolated houses and caused widespread destruction and distress. The troops of Ostend garrison were despatched to the rescue, and worked throughout the day buildirig ramparts with sandbags and attempting to repair the dykes, which still contain breaches. It is feared many small craft in the North Sea were overwhelmed, as wreckage is already coming ashore. The effect. of the gales was felt in England. Water backed up in the Thames Estuary. Heavy storms spread over France, followed by floods from the Alps, which demolished bridges and houses. The damage is enormous.
