MARUIA SPRINGS
REEFTON TO MURCHISON ROAD.
The road from Springs Junction to Station Creek in the Maruia district, a. distance of twelve miles, is to be completed, and work there will be provided for about thirty unemployed. This section will be the final link in the road between Reefton and Murchison, and will afford an outlet for a number of settlers who have suffered for a considerable time owing to the comparative isolation. The Maruia River will have to be bridged, to render the road complete, and preliminaries for this work are to be put in hand at once.
The road from Reefton to the Springs Junction, a distance of twenty-eight miles, has been declared a main highway. Practically all the formation and metalling work has been completed between Springs Junction and Station Creek.
Besides opening up a large tract of' valuable farming and pastoral land, and affording access for the farmer’s in the Maruia Valley, the through road will bring the • favourably known Maruia Springs within easy reach of those desiring to avail themselves of the .curative properties of the baths, which are only nine miles from the main Reefton-Murchison road.
It may not be generally known tihat the Maruia Springs are situated in- a valley which is 1700 ft above sea level. The valley is bounded- by a range of snowclad hills, the altitude and surroundings making the locality most suitable for a spa.
The projected completion of the road from Reefton to Murchison via Maruia will not be shorter than the present road via Inangahua, but it will open much desirable farming country, and will probably px’ovide access into Canterbury from Maruia,
