COBDEN TOWN BOARD

COMMISSIONERS MEET.

The ordinary meeting of the Cobden Town Board was held in the Board’s Offices last evening, there being present, Commissioners W. S. Clark (Chairman), Wimsett, Tennent, Uddstrom, Millar, and Walker.

Arising out of the minutes, attention was drawn by Cr Tennent to the fact that the date fixed for receiving the Sanitary fee, by the previous Board, was short of the quarter, and left grounds for grievance on the part of the ratepayers. —It was decided that that date in future be set as the 30th day of the month at the end of each quarter, in the event of a small change being necessary, the Town Clerk to advertise same.

A sub-committee, consisting of Crs Clarke, Walker and Tennent, was appointed to go into the question of the Ranger and Traffic Inspector’s schedule of duties.

The matter of providing a cemetery for Cobden was discussed and it was resolved, to suggest to the Greymouth Borough Council a meeting of all adjacent local bodies, to discuss the provision of a central cemetery to serve the several localities.

A grant of £ 2/10/- was made to the Greymouth Plunket Society. After eulogistic references as to her ability, the Board unanimously decided to raise the Town Clerk’s salary to £3 per week. Several Works Committee matters 'were dealt with.

An application was received from R. Jamieson for planks for a footbridge.—Decided that the request be jiot granted, as against the Board’s regulations. Messrs Stokes and Jackson applied for an approach to their property. — Works Committee to report.

Mr H. E. Holland M.P., advised that he would support the Board’s attitude in reference to the recent election of representatives of local bodies on the Technical High School Board of Governors.

Mr Holland also advised that the matter of the erection of huts at Rapahoe was now in the hands of the Mines Department; that a deputation had waited on the Prime Minister on the matter, and that he was now awaiting Mr Coates’s report. Correspondence was Received relating to the serving of a demolition order on J. Drake, in respect of properties owned by him and considered insanitary by the Board. It was decided to proceed with the matter along the usual lines, the owner having ignored the Board’s previous requests for the removal ofrthe buildings.

The Department of Health advised that the Board would have to appoint their Health Inspector to the extra position of Sanitary Inspector—To be complied with. The Health Inspector reported 20 visits made, and notified a case of diphtheria. The Mines, Department forwarded the balance of the Board’s deposit on the Boring Plant, after the deduction of costs.

The reports of the rating of farm lands in Boroughs were received and are to be left? on the table for the information of ratepayers.

Payment of Poll officers was set as follow:—Town Clerk £2/10/-; Clerk £2/5/-, and Deputy Returner £2. A case of refusal to admit the Sanitary Officer to a dwelling was placed in the Health Inspector’s hands. Plans and specifications of a dwelling were . submitted by Mr F. W. Washer, and a permit was granted, subject to the estimated cost being given. The Works Committe reported attention to the main street and the intention of attending shortly to sub. streets in the town. The Committee recommended that a garage proprietor be notified ■ that the doors of his garage be re-hung to open off the footpath, to comply with the by-laws. Cr Millar suggested that the Harbour Board be approached, and the suggestion be made to them that since blasting is going on in that vicinity the work be extended to widen the approach from Cobden to the Bridge, since the narrow roadway at present constituted a grave source of danger. He thought it would not require the removal of much rock. A motion to that effect was carried.
