SCHOOLS SIX-A-SIDE TOURNEY. The semi-finals and final ties for the Senior Medals was brought to a conclusion on the Recreation Ground on Saturday, in ideal weather, as were also the second round semi-finals and finals of the junior section. The arrangements were in the hands of Messrs A. G. Williams (Sec. Westland Schools’ Assn), and H. R. Barrett (Cobden). Bro. Bonaventure officiated as timekeeper, while Mr J. Vaughan (Blackball), put in a good day’s work by officiating as referee in all the nine games. At the conclusion of the games Mr Vaughan presented the medals to the members of the three Marists’ teams, who, as the results of the various games will testify had been most successful throughout. Mr Vaughan gave a brief address on the standard of football exhibited by the schoolboys during the present season, and pointed out that it was chiefly through the painstaking efforts of Messrs A. G. Williams, H. R. Barrett, Bro. Bonaventure and Bro. Tarcisius and other gentlemen, that Schoolboy Soccer in Westland at the present time was of such a high standard. The speaker also related to the team work , and individual play of the juveniles throughout the tournament, and hoped the schoolboys at the start of season 1929 would come forward and give of their best in view of the South Island Schools’ Tournament at Dunedin during the latter end of the season, probably during the August vacation, when an endeavour would be made by the Whst Coast Schools Association, to send a senior and junior team down to Dunedin to participate in the tournament. Mr Vaughan called upon the captains of the Marists “A” and “B” (seniors) and Marist “A” (junior) to receive the medals which they had won that day and congratulated each team on their successful achievement. Bro. Tarcisius (Marists) then presented the junior grade “runners-up” medals to the members of the Blackball “A” team, and congratulated the boys on their displays throughout the tournament, particularly during the semi-final against Marist “B” team After being one goal in arrears at the interval, the Blackball boys notched two brilliant goals in the second half and emerged victorious from the fray, by 2 goals to 1, and after doing the major portion of the attacking in the final tie, succumbed to a somewhat lucky goal, scored from a periodical breakaway. However, everything passed off quite pleasahtly, and quite in keeping with the occasion. Mr A. G. Williams and Bro. Tarcisius then tendered thanks to Mr Vaughan for coming forward, to their assistance on several occasions, in the capacity of Referee. Mr Vaughan briefly responded and said it had been a pleasure to come forward in the interests of schoolboys’ football, and he would only be too willing to offer his services should the occasion demand. At the conclusion of the presentations of medals to the various winners of the respective grades the manager of the Blackball teams called upon his boys to give three cheers for the Marist boys., the compliment being returned with gusto by the Marist juveniles, while the members of the various teams Grey Main, Cobden and Runanga, responded, by giving three rousing cheers for >the winners and runners-up in each section.

The results of the day’s encounters were as follow: —
