MISSING £10 NOTE

CONSTABLE CHARGED.

BOMBALA (N.S.W.), Sept. 16.

A case which aroused much interest locally came before the Court of Petty Sessions at Bombala, when a married man, Alfred Bowtell, was charged with being drunk in Maybe Street on August 18. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Constable Munro was the arresting policeman, and swore that Bowtell was very drunk. This was denied by defendant and a large number of witnesses.

The evidence showed that not very long before he was arrested, the defendant was paid a cheque for £l9 15s in the bar of the Imperial Hotel by G. J. Mawson (a contractor), for whom defendant had been working. After having several drinks he was arrested and charged with being drunk. He received bail some two hours later, and when Constable Munro handed him the money which had been taken from him at the time of his arrest, lie alleged that a ten pound note was missing. The hearing of the charge concerning the drunkenness lasted nearly all day, and the charge was dismissed. Constable Edward Munro was then charged with on August IS stealing the sum of £lO from Alfred Bowtell. He pleaded not guilty. After the evidence for the complainant was given the case was adjourned until October 9. George J. Mawson, a . well-known builder and contractor, was fined £1 and S/- costs for raving paid wages to Alfred Bowtell in the hotel.
