Mr and Mrs Eric Kitcliingham, returned on Saturday, from Ashburton.

Mr J. S. Ross left this morning for Christchurch.

Mr and Mrs Lawrence Gooch, who have been visiting Christchurch, returned to Hokitika on Saturday.

Mr B. Currie, of the Greymou'th Railway staff, will leave to-morrow on holiday, fpr Christchurch.

Mr C. D. McKenzie, Business Agent for New Zealand Railways, will arrive this afternoon from Christchurch.

Hon. H. L. Michel, M.L.C., and Mrs. Michel, and Mr D. J. Evans, returned from Wellington on Saturday, to Hokitika.

Captain W. Strachan, one of the Greymouth Harbour Board’s signalmen, completed his duties on Saturday, after 19 years’ service. His retirement was occasioned by ill-health.

The engagement is announced of Ann, youngest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Duffy, Reefton, to John R., only son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph O. Match, Brisbane.

Mr S. Groom, who has been in illhealth for some months, underwent another operation on Saturday at the Grey Hospital. His condition is as satisfactory as can be expected.

Miss Larsen, who is to be married shortly, resigned from the teaching staff of the Westport State School on Friday, and was presented by her pupils with a cake basket.

A London cablegram announced that the late Henry Whitehead left an estate worth £672,087. The charitable bequests exceed £125,000, including £40,000 to Masonic institutions.

Mr L. L. Marshall, who is to succeed Mr G. D. Smart, as train running officer, at the Greymouth railway offices, will arrive this afternoon. Mr Smart expects to leave on October 11 for Dunedin.

Mr James Blewman, one of Kaiata’s .oldest residents, will leave on Saturday for Christchurch, where he will reside. Mr Blewman has been prom- ' inent in all matters of Kaiata’s public welfare, being for six years chairman of the Kaiata Ratepayers’ Association, as well as a member of the Kaiata Tennis and Cricket Clubs. His departure will be much regretted in Kaiata.
