GASSED IN KITCHEN

PALMERSTON NORTH, October 1 The death, under tragic circumstances, occurred yesterday afternoon of Harry Meadley, 50, a baker, by occupation. The body of the deceased was discovered on a couch in the kitchen, with a gas tube nearby.

WHITEBAITER DROWNED. FOXTON, October 1

A Maori, named Rupaha Kemp, single, aged 30 years, a native of the Wanganui, River Settlement, was drowned off Manawatu Heads on Saturday evening. Deceased was whitebaiting, when the boat drifted from the shore, and he stripped off and swam after it, disappearing a short distance from the bank. The body has not yet been recovered.

AUCKLAND BURG LARS. AUCKLAND, October 1

The premise's of Aulsebrook and Co, confectionery manufacturers, Beach Road, were entered by burglars during the week-end. They entered the premises from the back, and had some liours of quiet work, judging by the litter left behind. They laboriously cut the back off the safe, but secured only about £lO. The safe was so large that it took five men to reinstate it upright.

WANGANUI TRAGEDIES

WANGANUI, September 29.

A railway porter, Carlyle Cranfield, 22, was knocked over by a rake' of tinclcs at the Wanganui Station this morning. Six passed over him. One foot was severed, and he died in a few minifies. He was crossing the line, rolling a cigarette, watching another train, and he did not see the moving trucks.

Archibald Benton, 47, widower, left last evening to cross the river in a flatbototmed boat to get a- floating log. He was not seen again, and it is presumed to have been drowned.

DUNEDIN STATISTICS. DUNEDIN, September 30.

The vital statistics for Dunedin for September are as follow, ( with last year’s figures given in parentheses): Births 134 (118); deaths 81, (75); marriages 34 (67). The figures for the quarter ended yesterday are: — Births, 370 (280) ; deaths, 271, (277); marriages 135, (180). The Customs returns for the past month are as follow (the figures for the corresponding period last appearing in parentheses): Customs £61,367 7s 6d (£58,755 4s 6d); beer duty, £17,276 0s lid (£20,253 12s 6d); tvres £744 Ils '9d; motor spirit £3,252 2s 4d. . The tyre and spirit taxes were not levied this time last year. The figures for the quarter ended yesterday are: Customs £206,031 16s 3d (£232,675 Is Id),; beer £47,973 5s 8d (£51,184 13s Bd.).
