HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL (Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, Sept. 29. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry) Crs. T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, W. Jeffries, Jas. King. A. C. Armstrong and Dr. Teichelmann. The Hokitika Gas Coy. wrote intimating that stock of 2000 gallons of tar was stored at gas works and asking for payment for 1000 gallons. Request acceded to. The Public Works Department, Wellington, forwarded approval for expenditure of £219 for maintenance of Main Highway in Borough for year ending 31st March 1929. The Greymouth and Hokitika branches of the Canterbury Automobile Association wrote soliciting Council’s support and co-operation in having the Kumara Junction to Flowery Creek Coast Road completed, and ■suggesting that Council pass resolution and forward it to the Government through 'the Member for the District. —Agreed to support the request. The N.Z. Refrigerating Coy. wrote that 168' sheep were delivered into Hokitika during the month of August, (and forwarding cheque for £B/8/Abattoir fees.

The Clerk, Grey County Council, forwarded cheque for £7B/9/11, being proportion of Heavy Traffic Fees for the period ended September 19. Miss F. A. Thompson, Weld Street, made application for refund of half cost (£2/19/-) of boundary fence between her section and Borough Reserve No. 534, Weld Street.—Referred to Town Clerk to enquire into. Miss F. A. Thompson Weld Street, wrote withdrawing her application to rent Reserve No. 54. —Accepted. A. R. Elcock aplied for consent to 'transfer lease No. 2038, Reserve No. 163, subsection 2, Hokitika M.C. Endowment from O. W. Amberger to F. G. Amberger.—Granted. The Public Works Dept. Greymouth, forwarded cheque for £29, being Main Highways Subsidy for maintenance from the Ist March to the 30th June. W. Connor, slaughterman, applied for fourteen days’ annual leave from the Ist to the 14th October inclusive, suggesting Mr. N. Karnbach as substitute.—Granted. Abattoirs Committee to make necessary arrangements. Mr. A. Key wrote relinquishing Borough Reserve 558, Rolleston Street.

R. Mackley wrote asking that approach to his garage in Hampden be gravelled.—To be attended to.

The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £1,069/12/6; payments £268/6/10, credit balance £1,059. It was resolved that Mr. .L. Gooch be given a large lease of land adjoining his property. It was resolved that the sum of £5O be donated to the Swimming Club to assist in repairing the bath, the Council to be supplied with a certified balance sheet each year from the Club. The Mayor referred to the County Council having obtained title to land on which their offices stand and including that on which the bath pumping station is. At his suggestion it was resolved to apply to the County Council for. an easement of that portion on which _the pumping plant stands.

The Mayor reported on the cost of piping the first mile of the* water supply line at the Lake with 9-inch pipe. The cost of pipes was estimated at £lOB4/11/-. This would almost double the present water supply. Cr. Jeffrfies stated he had seen the Hume pipes and was satisfied they would be a lasting job. The matter of commencing work was held over pending further information.

KUMARA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Kumara \ Borough Council took place on Thursday evening, when there were present: Mr A. B. Spiers (Mayor), Crs Murphy, Reedy, Benyon, McEnaney, Hamer, McDonald, Stewart, and Burrell. The Mayor said that since the last meeting of the Council, a conference had taken place between the representatives of the local bodies concerned in the upkeep of the Taramakau bridge, and that Mr Evans, one of the delegates, had offered to interview the Prime Minister on the matter when visiting Wellington in the course of a few days.

In reply to Cr Hamer, the Town Clerk said a minute of the conference had not been written up. Resolved that a report of the conference be recorded in the minutes.

A telegram was read from Mr Evans stating'he, together with the Member for the District,, had waited on the Prime Minister re the bridge, and that a definite reply would be received later. The Mayor moved that a hearty vote of thanks be recorded on the minutes to Mr Evans for the bother he had been put to. Cr Hamer seconded. —Carried. It was resolved that the Highways Board be written to asking for a subsidy towards the cost of renewing the large culvert in Seddon Street, also the culvert on the Beach Road, both of which had collapsed during the past fortnight. Regarding the supply of water for the town, the Mayor suggested that the matter be left over until next meeting, in order to get a report from the committee appointed. Cr Reedy considered the matter required immediate attention. Resolved, on the motion of Cr Murphy seconded by Cr McDonald, that Messrs Burrell and Rochford be asked to furnish a report for next meeting. It was resolved on the. motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Reedy, that the annual rates be struck. II was also resolved that ten pci 1 cent, interest bo added to all overdue rates for the current year.
