’ OPERA HOUSE The star attraction showing at the Opera House to-night will be Tom Mix and Tony the wonder horse in “Tumbling River.” There will also be the first chapter of the new serial “The Return of the Riddle Rider” starring William Desmond, the popular serial star. The management wish to announce that they have secured for showing to-night the topical film extraordinary Kingsford Smith’s arrival at Sockburn (Christchurch). This remarkable film shows every incident in connection with the arrival of tin? giant plane, the Southern Cross.

In “The Missing Link” Syd. Chaplin presents something “different”. Beginning a discouraged young man, he becomes entangled in the destinies of a famour big-game hunter, bound for Africa, and is carried off on the same liner. When the hunter learns desperate rivals are trying to do away with him, he persuades Syd. to be his .substitute. They arrive in Africa, where the fun begins in earnest. Syd. Chaplin in ‘The Missing Link” released by Master Pictures, comes to the Opera House on Monday next for a run of two days.

OTAGO-SOUTHLAND RE-UNION. That vigorous association recently formed by Otago and Southland exresidents, proposes holding a re-union dance on Wednesday next, September 19, in the United Pavilion. It is anticipated . that members and their friends will attend in full force since this is the first occasion on which a general social evening has been given .by the Society. The evening will provide an opportunity for the ladies to take part and Will be another milestone passed on the road to the permanent establishment of the Association. A dainty supper has been arranged by the ladies’ committee, and the programme of modern dances, with a strong infusion of old-time figures should find favour with all. The orchestra will be Williams’, and Messrs 'Kerr and Neville will be the M.sC. COBDEN DANCE McKane’s Hall, Cobden, is to be the scene of another enjoyable evening on Monday night, September 17, when the Cobden Tennis Club are holding a dance. Excellent arrangements were being made to ensure a successful function. Steel’s orchestra has been egaged, the floor is known to be good and a delightful supper is being provided. Moderate prices make the entertainment available to all and the Tennis Club are expecting a crowded floor. MUNICIPAL BAND CONCERT. Patrons of th© Municipal' Band are reminded that the second concert of the 1928 season takes place on Tuesday, September ,18. The opening item is the hymn, “Come Gracious Spirit. The inarch “Punchinello” is well named, and makes a delightful itemThe selection, “A Mountain Sylph,” is an entrancing piece of music. Descriptive items are always interesting, and the “Smithy in the Wood” depicts the smith’s life from before dawn to close of day. The intermezzo, “Cavalleyia Rusticana” brings out great solo work, the principal of which is taken by the soprano cornet, solo cornet, and euphonium. The concert selection, “Cflassica” is an interesting item, containing excerpts from the world’s classics, such as Toreador’s Song from “Carmen,” Mendelssohn’s “Spring Song,” Prelude (Rachmaninoff), Gavotte (Mignon), “La Miserere” (II Trovatore), Chopin’s Prelude No. 20, “Wililam Tell,” “Valse” (Faust), Beethoven’s “Minuet,” Brahm’s “Hungarian Dance,” Handel’s “Largo” and Lizst’s “Rhapsodie Hongroise,” all going to make a glorious number. The descriptive fantasia, “A Rural Wedding,” is novel, introducing the wedding service, minister, bride, groom and father, all being faithfully portrayed by the respective instruments. “A Turkish Patrol” concludes the band’s item. Mrs Baumgart (Miss Nellie Chunn) will, render the solo “Forgotten.” Miss Marie Parfitt will render a humorous recitation entitled “At the Dentist’s.” Two new performers, Messrs C- Brown and Madden, both of Otira, will appear. Mr Brown is a capable violinist. His item will be Coleridge-Taylor’s choice work entitled “Three Four.” Mr Madden is the possessor of a pleasing voice, and his work is highly spoken of.
