GOLF

COAST I.ADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP

The final of Ihe Ladies’ West Coast Golf Championship was played on Saturday between Mrs. Slee (Westport) and Miss N. Tennent, (Greymouth) under wet conditions. The rain which was only light at commencement became much heavier after some five or six holes had been played. The display—as is the case in most finals, was not by any means of a brilliant nature.

Miss Tennent is only in her second year of golf and is to be congratulated on her performances this season. Naturally she was somewhat nervous on Saturday and had to give way to a very experienced player, Mrs. Slee winning by 5 and 4. Following is a brief description of the game: — No. I—Mrs. Slee winning the toss took honour and was 15 feet past pin in her second. Her putt was wide but the 4th finished up in the tin. Miss Tennent took 3 to reach green, overran 9ft putt and had to be content with 6. —Mrs. Slee 1 up. No. 2—Mrs. Slee reached right hand corner of green with drive whilst Miss Tennent was 30 yards short. Latter weak in approach. 3rd and 4th overran pin. Mrs. Slee too strong with putts and holed in 4 to opponent’s 5.

—Mrs. Slee 2 up. No. 3.—Both good drives. Mrs. Slee having 15 yards’ advantage. Miss Tennent duffed 2nd and just short of green .in 3rd whilst 4th stopped 12 inches to right of pin. Mrs. Slee put up a stymie with 3rd and Avon hole with a 4 to opponent’s 6. —Mrs. Slee 3 up. No. 4 —Both fair drives at Firs — Miss Tennent having the better direction and advantage—and were through the green with seconds. Putts i were too strong and hole halved with fives. —Mrs. Slee 3 up. No. s—Fair5 —Fair drives. Miss Tennent i pin high to right of green in second ■ and .Mrs. Slee’s ball pulled up .on slope in front of green. Both overran j pin and finished up with fours. —Mrs. : Slee 3 up. No. 6—Mrs. Slee topped drive and reached paddock on left. Miss Tennent well away slightly to right. Seconds were poor owing to bad lies. Miss Tennent pulled 3rd to left and beyond green. Approach too strong and putt went wide. Mrs. Slee got good 3rd and mashied to a couple of' feet beyond pin. Sank the putt and won with 5 to opponent’s 6. —Mrs. Slee 4 up. No. 7. —Good drives. Mrs. Slee brassied well but found a bad lie reaching outer edge of green with nice mashie shot. Her putt was too strong and failed to find tin in 6th. Miss Tennent was on edge of green in 4 and failed to sink a 2ft putt for 5. The hole was a gift to her but she had to be satisfied with a halve for 7. — Mrs. Slee 4 up. No. 8. —Mrs. Slee pulled her drive and cleared the hawthorn with a well timed mashie shot which rested on the edge of green. This hole spelt disaster to Miss Tennent. Hei* drive landed at foot of hedge and glanced through pulling up in a hoof mark in bunker. Picking up she came back but duffed her next to hedge, after incurring two penalties. She was through the grfeen for 5, and the approach had too much pace. Mrs. Slee was weak in putt and sinking sth. Miss Tennent I picked up.—Mrs. Slee 5 up. No. 9 —Both good drives —equal distance. Miss Tennent slightly to right. Mrs. Slee poor 2nd whilst Miss Ten-

nent pushed hers 30 yards past it. Both were to left of green in 3rd. Mrs. Slee’s 4th overran pin by 12ft, was unsuccessful with putt but put up a partial stymie and took the hole with 6 to opponent’s 7. —Mrs. Slee 6 up. No. 10 —Mrs. Slee commenced the home voyage with a good drive and Miss Tennent only covered a fair distance after 3 smites. The former had weak 2nd and punched 3rd out to right. Approach was short but ball was out of sight for 6. Miss Tennent got on to her 4th but the sth was short of green whilst Gth was too powerful. 6—7. Mrs. Slee 7 up. No. 11—Both well off the tee. Mrs. Slee reaching green whilst her opponent was pin high to left. Miss Tennent was within striking distance with 2nd and Mrs. Slee short. The latter effected a partial stymie with 3rd and Miss Tennent sank both balls in her next, halving the hole for 3. —Mrs. Slee dormie 7.

No. 12—Both were well over the creek with drives, were within mashie distance for 3rds, and reached greens with good lofts. Their putts were short and Miss Tennent had her revenge by putting up a stymie. Mrs. Slee failing to negotiate gave Miss Tennent her first hole 5—6. Mrs. Slee 6 up.

No. 13—Miss Tennent was now shewing improved form but the effort was too late in its appearance. Good drives. Mrs. Slee getting better direction. Seconds were for safety. Mrs. Slee was between bunker and green fence in 3rd whilst Miss Tennent was just inside fence, pushed her 4th up the bank and left her next on lip of hole. Mrs. Slee was through the green in 4th, failed to sink sth and her 6th in 'finding the tin caused enough vibration to save Miss Tennent any further worry. 5—6. Mrs. Slee dormie 5.

No. 14—Good drives with Miss Tennent slight advantage. Airs. Slee’s nice 2nd to left of green whilst Miss Tennent was short to right. Putts were weak and hole was halved in bogey 4 leaving Mrs. Slee 5 up and 4 Io play.
