THE IMPLACABLE
GIFT BY LORD WOOLAVINGTON.
The London “Morning Post” recently published a leading! article concerning the Implacable, “that famous ship of Nelson’s day,” in which it was stated that £4OOO was needed immediately to equip the ship for officers, crew, and 250 boys for holiday training. “We have already pointed out,” the article added, “that, by saving this ship, the trio of the Old Navy, Victory (three-decker), Implacable (twodecker) , and Foudroyant (frigate), will be complete, which is another good purpose to be served. “We do not want to frighten charitable readers; but in case this article should come under the eye of a benevolent millionaire, we may add that, besides the £4OOO immediately wanted, £20,000 will be required as a capital sum to maintain the Implacable as a permanent holiday training ship for boys. The day after this leading article appeared, the editor received the following letter from Lord Woolavington: “I have to-day read with the deepest interest your inspiring message regarding Nelson’s old warship Implacable. I send you gladly my cheque herewith for the sum required to clear the decks for future beneficient action. ---Woolavington.” Enclosed was a cheque for £4OOO.
