WORLD PEACE
JAPANESE* COMMENT Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.) TOKIO, August 23. The leading vernacular newspapers support Japan’s approval of the naval proposals, hailing the Anglo-French movement as wise statesmanship, leading to an adjustment of the differences in international viewpoints, preparatory to a conference of the Powers wherein an honest endeavour should be made to relieve the burden of armaments, and retrieve the failure of the last Geneva Conference. Surprise is expressed at America’s reported distrust, which is unintelligible in view of the anti-war proposals.
ITALIAN CRITICISM OF U.S.A
ROME, August 22. The Press here refers to the United States Treaty with Egypt, which was concluded without consulting Britain, as “a gross discourtesy” and “a scandalous impertinence, only construable as a deliberate attempt to humiliate Britain.” They declare it is' yet another incident in the great Anglo-American duel, and that it proves that the renunciation of war as an instrument of national policy does not, in American eyes, imply the complete renunciation of any consequent Imperial policy.
