HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

HOKITIKA, August 11.

The Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs D. J. Evans, Dr Teichelmann, A. C. Armstrong, Jas. King, E. W. Heenan, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff. After the minutes had been confirmed the Mayor referred to the death of Mr John Murdoch, an old pioneer, and moved a vote of condolence to deceused’s family. This was carried, the Council standing in silence. The Secretary of the Hokitika Gas Company wrote, conveying the , Directors’ acceptance of the Council’s conditions for leasing Municipal Reserve No. 519.—The Mayor, Crs Elcock and Duff to sign the contract. August Krakowsky wrote re arrears of rental on Municipal Reserve No. 452. —Offer accepted. Messrs D. P. Stuart and others, Stafford Street, wrote asking that the work of installing a fire plug a t corner of Stafford and Jollie Streets be proceeded with ,without delay. Resolved that the request be given effect. Hon. Secretary of the Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote, intimating that the standpipes (1) opposite the Town Hall, and (2) opposite the Red Lion Hotel, required immediate attention, as it is not possible to lift water from either standpipe. —The Brigade to be asked if it is necessary to maintain the well opposite the Town Hall. Mr S. B- White wrote, • applying to hire the Town Hall for a period of twelve days, for the purpose of exhibiting furniture and furnishings—To be informed that it is not convenient to let the Town Hall for the period mentioned. The Chairman Advisory Board Greymouth branch of Plunket Society, Greymouth, wrote asking for an annually recurring grant towards funds of the society.—£s 5/- granted to the local branch. , o Accounts amounting to £lOB 13/3 were passed for payment. The Treasurer’s report showed receipts £l5O 11/2, payments £593 14/6, credit balance £424 2/10. It was resolved that the typiste s salary be raised to £5 per month part time. At the request of the Town Clerk, several amounts standing on the books were pronounced irrecoverable and are to be struck off. The Abattoirs Manager (Mr J. Jarman) reported animals slaughtered for the month : 22 cows, 24 heifers, 69 bullocks, 169 sheep, 5 lambs, 17 pigs, 17 calves, 2 cows condemned. Fees received £64 4/-, compared with £62 for corresponding month last year. The Overseer reported on various works carried out during the month.

WESTLAND COMPETITIONS.

HOKITIKA, August 11. A meeting of the Westland Competitions Society was held last evening, Mr D. J. Evans presiding. There were also present: Messrs J. Conning, RLynn, H. Stapleton, 11. W. R. Sweney, Rev. Knowles-Smith, W. E. Richards, Rev. J. W. Hayward, J. W. Morris (secretary). Apologies were received for absence of Messrs Coles and Partridge. Arrangements were completed for the competitions to start on Saturday next. Entries were reported as very satisfactory, and include competitors from Greymouth and Ross. It was decided to put on the men’s section of Shakesperian selections on Saturday night next to enable the Grey men to attend. It was resolved that Rev. Nelson Wright be a vice-president, thus the four clergy of the town are now vicepresidents of the society. UNITED CLUB The United Literary and Debating Club held their weekly meeting at the Pavilion last evening. There was a good attendance of members, Mr. D. M. Robertson acting as Chairman in the absence of the President. Readings, recitations, monologues, orations, impromptu speeches and debates were practised by members in view of the forthcoming competitions. The team to represent the Club at the Competitions was then selected by the selectors. Considerable improvement was shown by members in the rendering of their various items.
