DENNISTON MINERS

COURT CASE PENDING

Another interesting development is reported in connection with the opposition shown by the Miners’ Unions towards the co-operative or tribute system which has been established at several West Coast mines, notably the Cascade Mine in the Westport district, and the Roa mine.

The Denniston Miners’ Union is to be proceeded against, the allegation being that an offence has been committed by the Union under Section 15 of the Labour Disputes Investigation Act, 1913. The wording of the charge is as follows:—That the Union, being a society of workers within the meaning of the Labour Disputes Investigation Act, on or about May 20, did instigate. aid, or abet an unlawful strike of coal miners at the Cascade-West-port Company’s mine, contrary to the provisions of the Act. The penalty claimed for the alleged breach is £250. The case will be heard at Westport, at an early date.
