Greymouth Evening Star. AND BRUNNERTON ADVOCATE. SATURDAY, AUGUST 11th., 1928. COBDEN JUBILEE

pOBDEX' is eelebrat irt£ the diamond jubilee o|‘ Ihe district Stale School, next week, and lhe pt'epar.-il ion made should ensure memorable ngs. School life during' so long a period is one of the most important features in any district’s history, and (’obden school can claim a proud record. In another portion of this issue, we publish some ri'eollections of ('obden happening's, and these will be read with keen interest, not only by ('obden people, but by all on the West Coast. Cobden hits done its part in building up ('oast prosperity. and is itself developing' into a tine township.

The time has come when a real step forward should be made, and

this would best take the form of amalgamation with Greymouth. For most workaday purposes, Cobden is part of Greymouth and there is no necessity for a division in common administration. Co-opera-tion would effect benefits for both, and, indeed, unless Cobden joins the borough, it is difficult to see how those who live on the northern side of the river, can obtain the civic facilities, the ever-increasing growth of Cobden demands. Few Cobden people can be really satisfied with the present state of affairs, and no other scheme promises quicker reform than the furthering of the Greater Greymouth proposal. Cobden’s interests, under such plan would be adequately safeguarded, and the closer union would mean greater strength for both Cobden and Greymouth. If the diamond jubilee celebrations help to concentrate public attention on the advantages of amalgamation with, the borough, a valuable harvest will be assured. Meanwhile, in offering best wishes for the success of Cobden’s celebrations of 60 years’ schoollife, admiration can be expressed for those who during that time, have worked for district advancement. Some mistakes have been made, but that is common to all districts, and, to-day, it will be the achievements, not any failures, that demand attention. Cobden school has sent forth in the world several lads and lassies who have made good in wider fields than the Coast offered, and this roll of honour is sure to be annually maintained. if past traditions are preserved, as doubtless they will be. Greymouth’s support should be readily forthcoming to assist the Cobden Jubilee. During recent Borough Jubilee commemorations, and indeed on all occasions when help was appreciated, Cobden parents and pupils have been invariably cheerful co-operators with Greymouth folk, and gratitude alone suggests returning the compliment. It was pleasing to note that the Mayor and Borough Councillors officially’ recorded their appreciation of Cobden’s ready assistance at all times, and this lead should be generally followed, and the sympathy take practical form. The older generation attending the celebrations v*ill note the great difference 1 between the earlier and present day Cobdens, and it will be a happy thought for. both old and young, that great as has been the development during the past 60 years, this is small, compared with what is likely to be flu* district’s progress during the forthcoming 60 years. Community effort can .achieve civic miracles, ami no more valuable lesson can be taught in any school, than to impress on the pupils the duty they have, throughout life, to work for tin* betterment of the district in which thev chance to reside.
