MINERS’ COUNCIL
RESULT OF ELECTIONS. (Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, June 26. The following was the result of the West Coast Miners’ Council’s election of District President and Secretary: President: T. Whittle (Denniston). Secretary: W. Balderstone (Blackball). The figures are not yet obtainable, as they have not been checked by the Returning Officer. Mr. Whittle had two opponents, viz., J K. Connel (State Mine) and J. MeQuilkin (Blackball). Mr. Whittle had a substantial majority in all the mining townships, with the exception of Runanga and Blackball. Mr. Balderstone was opposed by J. Gillaly (State Mine). Mr. Balderstone obtained a majority in all places except Runanga. CASCADE MINE. The deadlock at the Cascade mine still continues. A conference has been arranged for this evening with the Directors of the Company, when it is hoped that an agreement will be reached. The Denniston Union officials will be delegates, and the President and Secretary of the District Council will also attend. It is six weeks since the unionists were withdrawn from the mine, but the contract party under Moynihan is still working.
