“BOROUGH COUNCIL”

UNITED CLUB’S MEETING

Constituting themselves members of the Greymouth Borough Council, without the formality of an election, members of the United Debating Club held their first Council meeting last evening, and it proved one of the most enjoyable and humorous ever held in the Club’s Pavilion. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. Greenslade) presided, and the proceedings were as lengthy as those of the real Council. The range of subjects covered is indicated by the order paper, which was as follows: —

Mr. B. Awkward, applying for a permit to build balcony on his building in Mackay Street.—Recommended, subject to “Engineer’s” new suspension methods being adopted and provided that applicant does not attempt the work himself.

Grey District Progress League urging the necessity of removal of all condemned buildings which are the subject of adverse comment by tourists and visitors. —Referred to Town Planning Committee for report. West Coast Cricket Association thanking Council for attention to Rec. and requesting that periods for winter and summer sports be appointed. —Cr. appointed as delegate to go into the matter. From residents of Marsden Road asking for water in mains.—Several schemes were submitted to supply the “want.” Finally it was decided that request be granted. A businessman in Mawhera Quay, asking for permission to erect kerbside petrol pump at premises, Mawhera Quay.—Request be not granted. Taxi drivers objecting to the removal of Taxi Stand. —Held over tor further consideration.

Technical School asking that street be cleaned up on High Street front and that scholars will beautify same if this is done. —Recommended for immediate attention.

Feather, Hyde and Skin Co. asking permission to erect premises' on Sec. 29, Block 16, Shakespeare Street.— Permission be not granted.

Ratepayers’ Association, calling attention to high rates and requesting that ways and means be found to redupe same. NOTICES OF MOTION Councillor “B” moved that the Government be asked to amend the Municipal Corporations Act so that it shall be legal to grant an honorarium of not more than £5O to each councillor and that the member for the district be asked to support same.— Lost on the vote.

Councillor “R” moved that the Council take steps to place before the Cobden ratepayers the advantages to be derived from amalgamation with the Borough of Greymouth.—Carried.

Councillor “M” moved that the Council take over the financial obligation of the Municipal Band and be responsible for maintenance. —Referred to finance committee. Councillor “R” moved that a town manager be appointed to administer the affairs of the Borough thus doing away with the services of the councillors. —Lost.
