Fifty-two years at sea in the employ of one firm in which son and grandson are also serving, is the record of Captain W. Wildman, commander of the Anchor Shipping Company’s steamer Arahura, in the Wellington-Nelson service. It was on May 20 that Captain Wildman completed his 52nd year with the Anchor Company. He looks hale and hearty and says he feels well yet. Many years ago he was in command of the old Waverley, which has now ended her sea-going career, and in that ship his son sailed with him as boy. The son is Captain A. Wildman, master of the Anchor Company’s steamer Ngaio, so that father and son maintain daily service between Wellington and Nelson. Captain A. Wildman’s son has followed the family profession and has been at sea for some time.
SCHELDEPAS’ MISHAP.
(Special to "Star.”)
AUCKLAND, May 29
As soon as she has been sufficiently lightened by the discharge of her cargo, an examination of the Belgian steamer Scheldepas will be made, to discover the actual extent of the damage she sustained through colliding with a derelict in the Pacific, when en route to Auckland. Apparently, pie damage is confined to the stern, where there is a continuous leak into the forepeak. If necessary, temporary repairs will be made while the vessel is at the wharf, but it is thought probable that on completion of discharge, she will have to go into dry dock. Meanwhile, owing to the delay that has been caused through the accident, a general average has been declared on the cargo.
