MELBOURNE, Moy 29.
After a special meeting, , the, Shipowners’ Association announced that several of the Waterside Workers’ Federation’s questions had been considered, but, so far as the owners were concerned, there had been no developments.
It is stated that the Watersiders’ Federation have now withdrawn from the negotiations with the shipowners, thus leaving the matter in Mr Tudehope’s hands. The owners are, however, determined not to negotiate with Mr Tudehope until the cooks resume work.
The crew of the steamer Canberra will to-day be paid off, tlfus indicating that there is little likelihood of a settlement.
SEAMEN OPPOSE STRIKE
(Recd. May 30, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 30.
In addition to the Canberra, the shipowners have now decided to pay off the Crew of the Katoomba which has just arrived from Fremantle, and. has a crew of 182. This makes twenty vessels, with an aggregate tonnage of 87,000 idle through the marine cooks’ strike, ‘ . d
The Waterside Workers’ Union had high hopes for a settlement on the basis of the compromise proposed by Mr. Tudehope. The failure of the negotiations throws the onus back on Mr. Tudehope, who has been asked to attend a meeting of the Trades Union. Council, and maritime workers at Trades Hall, Melbourne, to-morrow.
The Newcastle, Victorian and South Australian seamen held mass meetings and agreed by resolution to hold aloof from the strike. Each condemned the action of Jacob Johnson, general president, for adopting the role of dictator on the cooks’ strike.
The New South Wales branch held a stormy meeting, and decided upon a non-committal attitude.
Shipowners are convinced that Johnson tried to involve the seamen and the attempt ignominiously failed.
