PALMERSTON NORTH, May 29. A sad tragedy occunred at Makerua this afternoon. Martin Dalzell, a son of Thomas Dalzell, a well-known flaxmiller, was killed by a fall from a dray through the horse bolting, and the dray passing over him and breaking his neck. WOMAN’S DEATH. AUCKLAND, May 30. Mrs Nellie Parrish, an elderly woman, died at the hospital, as the results of injuries sustained on May 19, when knocked down by a bicycle as she stepped from the pavement. The bicycle was ridden by James Featherstone. ESCAPEE RECAPTURED. AUCKLAND, May 30. Frank Baller, one of the two pifisoners who escaped from Mt. Eden Gaol on Friday night in sensational circumstances, was recaptured by Detectives Knight and . Davis, accompanied by Constable Bishop, of Birkenhead, at Shark Bay, between Chelsea and Kauri Point, on the upper reaches of Auckland Harbour. MAN ACCUSED. DUNEDIN, May 29.

A grave charge of carnally knowing a girl between the ages of 10 and 12 years, was preferred against John Henry Appleby, aged 62 years, a wellknown resident of Palmerston, at the Palmerston Magistrate’s Court today.

Accused, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial to the Supreme Court at Dunedin, bail being allowed.

MAN DROWNED. WELLINGTON, May 29.

At about 1 o’clock this afternoon Anthony McHale, boiler scaler, aged 50 years, living in Buckle Street, fell off the Queen’s Wharf into the har ; bcur. He was taken from the water almost immediately, and artificial respiration was applied by Dr. Faulke, but he failed to respond to the treatment, and the doctor pronounced life extinct. He leaves a wife, residing at Liverpool, England.

RAILWAY GUARDS.

The following resolutions in regard to the suggested formation of a Train Running Union, were carried unanimously at a meeting of the Palmerston North Guards’ Club. (1) This club deprecates the move to form a Train Running Union, and absolutely refuses to recognise or consider the proposals. (2) That further, this club reaffirms its loyalty to the A.S.R.S., and calls on all members to strenuously oppose any movements likely to disintegrate its organisation.

RURAL CREDITS. PAHIATUA, May 30.

A largely attended meeting of farmers was addressed by Mr S. J Smith, Masterton, Deputy Supervisor, of the Rural Credit Board.

The Chairman (Mr G. H. Hodd, ■President of the Farmers’ Union) proposing a hearty vote of thanks,,complimented Mr Smith on the address. He said it was not a political question. He considered it a genuine effort on the part of the Legislature to assist those hard up against it. The forming of an association would eventually prove a great blessing.

OTAIO DISPUTE. TIMARU, May 29.

Al the Magistrate’s Court, Bernard Lewis Blackwell and Ernest Gladstone McCunn were charged: (1) That on May 11, at Otaio, they did break and enter the dwelling houses of William Alfred Ancell and Robert Barr, with intent to commit crime; and (2) that they did break and injure such hoqses with intent to intimidate. The former was also charged with assault. The cases are a sequel to the sensational shooting affray at Otaio. After hearing lengthy evidence, the accused were committed for trial on all the charges. .Both were admitted to bail, McCann, in £4OO and Blackwell ,in £lOOO, and they are to report daily to the police. AUCKLAND TRANSPORT. AUCKLAND, May 29. The inquiry into Auckland's transport problems took a. new turn today, when it was suggested, on behalf of the local bodies represented at the Transport Commission that the Council should confer with the subur-> ban authorities to dismiss the question) of establishing a Transport Board. I As the result of a luncheon-hour consultation, it was agreed that the City Council should hold a meeting to discuss the suggestion for a conference. This meeting will probably take place to-morrow. The suggestion of the conference was made after the Chairman. Mr Barton, S.M., had referred to the necessity for cutting down the evidence, in view of the fact that the Commission had been silting for a month. He also said that the evidence to date tended, in the opinion of the Commission, to indicate that neither a Greater Auckland nor a Metropolitan Board was within the scheme of practical politics of the present or the near future.
