An inquiry has been in progress for some time past concerning the riding in the two Highweight Handicaps at the recent Rotorua Racing Club’s annual meeting. It is alleged by the racing authorities that there was a conspiracy among certain jockeys regarding the running of certain horses in those events, and the matter will be finally dealt with by the Judicial Committee of the Rotorua Jockey Club next week. Beau Cavalier still ranks a firm favourite for the Great Northern Steeplechase. A recent Auckland message states: In brilliant fashion, Beau Cavalier negotiated the full steeplechase course, his exhibition being woithy ot the highest praise. A fast pace was maintained throughout and at each fence the Chesterfield gelding evoked admiration by the lightning-like manner in which he fenced. There a/re some who contend his 12.2 is too gi eav a burden. Certainly there are many in the race capable of making the Chesterfield gelding do his best, but it is interesting to recall that Beau Cavalier carried 11.7,- 91bs. less, in the Grand National Steeplechase at the beginning of this season, and led all the way to win easily. He is at present as fit as hands can make him. With reasonable luck he should be capable of a great race. Up to the present, no rider has been announced for him.

A well-fancied candidate, Glendowie, will be ridden by S. Henderson, who piloted Beau Cavalier in his three big steeplechase successes—the Great Northern, Wellington, and Grand National. Glendowie is a young and promising steeplechaser, and if his condition is right on the day thelre are stranger things likely than Henderson’s riding another winner of the big cross-country race. The forward running of Tuki in the Wanganui Steeplechase demonstrated that he is in good trim, more especially as he was travelling strongly at the end and outstayed all 'those behind him. The Quin Abbey gelding is just as clever as ever in his fencing and gave a delightful exhibition. Last year Tuki wds expected to race prominently in the ■ Great Northern Steeplechase, but made a poor showing, to subsequently spring a surprise in the Winter Steeplechase on the last day. He seems certain to pay his way again this winter, and may be more prominent in the Great Northern next month, even though he has 41b. mo’re than last year. His sound fencing will always give him a jumper's chance. Aberfeldy had his first schooling at Auckland on Thursday. A northern report states: Great interest was centred in the schooling task of Archibald (H. Duileu) and Aberfeldy (Tilson), who weer sent over five fences on the course proper. Archibald was the quicker jumper of the pair, taking the lead at the second fence, and at the last hurdle he had about a couple of lengths advantage after alighting over the. last hurdle, and went on to beat Aberfeldy by half a dozen lengths. It would not come as a surprise to some to find Mister Gamp playing a big part in the Great Northern Hurdles. There is no form like winning form, and in his recent essays, Mister Gamp has jumped well and shown staying ability. He was very unlucky in the hack hurdles at Wanganui, as he was brought down by a hurdle that was swinging back as he went to jump it. Since 1907, when the distance for the Great Northern Hurdles was increased to 21 miles, the biggest weight carried to victory was 11.2 by Kohn (1923) and Fisher (1921). Wedding March Avon last year with 10.3 and has 11.8 this year, but is a brilliant fencer. He is preferred to Archibald (10.12), whom he defeated easily on even terms at the. Auckland Autumn meeting, when Wedding March won the Brighton Hurdles from Revel, but whether he can hold Brigadier Bill (10.3) and Perle de Leon (10.2) is doubtful. Aberfeldy was beaten at Wanganui, while Archibald showed to better advantage in a recent work out, but he has scarcely yet thrown off the effects of the long journey, and should strip in good order. Aberfeldy is a great jumper and a confirmed stayer. The Cornwall Handicap candidate Princess Ronnie continues to gallop well at headquarters. The daughter of Polydamon likes to feel the ground under her feet, and at Ellerslie in June the conditions are just the reverse, and next month promises to be as bad as its predecessors. But for this the Princess would be a possibility. » There are no surprises in the Auckland acceptances. Fifteen remain in the Great Northern Hurdles and the same number in the Steeples. Those claiming double engagements are Beau Cavalier, Wedding March, Archibald, Brigadier Bill, Maunga, Perle de Leon, Royal Form and Pouri, so that over half of each field is engaged in both races.

Perle de Leon was sent out second choice for the Grand National Hurdles but fell. He won the Jumpers’ Flat and later ran second to Aberfeldy over two miles. Fie is looked upon as one of the best propositions in the Great Northern. Recently he was several times placed in distance events. Auckland fences are not difficult, and he should be wound up for a great race. For the past eleven years, aged horses have won the Great Northern Steeples. The field this year contains Wedding March and Wee Marble (6), Wiltshire, Glendowie and Mangani (5). Of these, Wiltshire and Glendowie are promising chasers. Wiltshire has a good knowledge of the country. In his last six starts he has recorded four win<s, including two over the Auckland steeplechase country, the defeated including Wedding March and Glendowie. He is certain to play a. prominent part with 9.13. There are a. few surprising defections in the Cornwall Handicap, notably Valkou, White Fang, and Sir Archie. Sir Archie figures in the Members’ Handicap of six furlongs. There are only two mares in the Great Northern Hurdles, Mia Bella and Vexatious. Mares have played a very small part in the decision of this race. Since El Gallo’s double

win in 1915-16, geldings have won every race. Mister Gamp is five years, Wedding March and Aberfeldy 6 years. The remainder in the Great Northern Hurdles are aged. For Dunedin: Black Mint was unable to handle the turns on the Wanganui course, but his two races there last week were sufficiently encouraging to Mr. Ballinger to decide to send him to Wingatui for the Birthday Handicap. As A. Goodman will have the bulk of his team engaged at Otaki, Black Mint will go south in charge of the head lad, A. Scrimshaw. C. Emerson has applied for the ride and in all probability he will get the mount. Black Mint should do well on the trip as he is just striking form again and he runs well on. a heavy track. It is interesting to recall that Black Mint was tried at Ellerslie last year, and raced creditably, securing a third to Master Doon

and True Blood in the York Handicap on the third day in holding going. A Southland report says: Three well-known gallopers engaged in the Birthday Handicap (1£ miles) at Wingatui next month, Queen Balboa, Bilbo and Soltoe, galloped' from the one mile and a half mark on the S.R.C. tracks yesterday morning, with the last-named making the pace over the early stages. The very heavy going was against the runners, who were kept well in hand throughout. Two furlongs from home Soltoe was eased and the pair from the team of F. W. Ellis ran home strongly in company, carving out the final mile and a-quaf-ter in 2.26 2-5. The first six furlongs of the mile and a quarter were left behind in 1.25 and the mile covered in 1.58 2-5, while the last mile occupied 1.58. It was a useful effort in which Bilbo had his head in front by enough to swear by at the finish. The seasoned performers pulled up well. It is evident that Oriflamb’s mission at Dunedin on the first day will be the Jumper’s Flat (1J miles). The

■ West Coast owned gelding is in woii l derful order and will strip the fittest ' horse in the field. ' As anticipated, Celerity 11. has not accepted for the Birthday Handicap, ’ but will be reserved for the second and ' third days. Bilbo, Black Mint, Queen ; Balboa and Overdrawn are now in most demand. Scamp will have every opportunity to make amends at Dunedin in the ’ Otago Steeplechase' with 10.7. The big Kilram gelding is a fine jumper, but has not had the best of luckfthis season. The Babe is a promising jumper . and it looks as if this pair should ; fight out the issue. The best field at Dunedin is the i Tradesmen’s Handicap, in which ! Black Duke was the only withdrawal l leaving 14 acceptors. Gay Sonnet, King i Balboa, and Tip Tree are receiving ■ early support. Carnit and Antrim Boy should go well. Carnot has been . racing consistently well and has made i the pace in the majority of his recent j races.
