HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Our Own Corr*' <spondent.) HOKITIKA, May 26. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs A. R. Elcock.' Jas King, G. Heinz, E. Teichelmann, W. Jeffries, A. C. Armstrong, E. W. Heenan, D. J. Evans. The Manager of the Hokitika Savings Bank wrote stating that the right of way was being cleaned up and asking for a few loads of gravel. The N.Z. Refrigerating Coy. wrote stating that 11 sheep were delivered to Hokitika during April. The Secretary of the Lyttelton Picnic wrote thanking the Council and citizens of Hokitika for hospitality and kindness extended to the visitors during the stay in Hokitika. The Chairman, No. 12 Highways District, wrote intimating that the Board would subsidise the widening, reconditioning and tar sealing of the main highway through the Borough. The Stationmaster, Hokitika, wrote stating that the requests of the Council re the railway crossing, lighting, and shunting on Weld Street, would be looked into. The manager W. Duncan and Jones (for Miss Jones), wrote pointing out that the side wall of the street at the corner of Stafford and Bealey Street is in need of repair.—Referred to P.W. Committee. The Director of Town Planning, Wellington, wrote stating that in his opinion, 40 feet should be regarded as the minimum frontage for a single dwelling house. —The Director be written to explaining that the section in question will have sufficient sunlight. Mr Chesterman (Overseer) report ed that minor repairs had been done to the reservoir, and that further repairs are to be carried out shortly, taking about three days. During that time it will be essential that a full supply be obtained from the penstock at Kanieri Forks. Cr Jeffries objected to what he considered tinkering with the engineer’s report which has cost the Council £6O. It appeared the Councillors were going to discard the engineer’s report and each set himself up as an authority on hydraulics. The Mayor, Cr Evans, and others disagreed with Cr Jeffries, considering that the reservoir should be made to hold a good supply of water.

It was resolved that the Overseer proceed with the repairs to the reservoir and also that the depth of water be limited to nine feet. The application of Mr T. Coyle (employee of the Borough) for his annual leave, was granted. The Treasurer reported receipts £93/15/-; .payments £324/7/3. Accounts amounting to £445/4/8 were passed for payment. It was resolved that the water supply pipe line be extended between Rolleston and Davie Streets. A report was received on the unemployed question, and it was reported by Cr Evans that the Mahinapua Lake road is to be put in hand almost immediately, but the work is to be reserved for married men. The work of reconstructing the highways in the Borough will also be put in hand shortly, when the work will be carried out on the co-operative system. Cr Evans suggested that the footpath around the outside of Cass Square be gravelled, thereby saving the expense of periodically cutting the blackberry. The Beautifying Society would assist. The Mayoi- and Cr Jeffries considered the work useless and that the money -would be better spent on the roads. On the motion of Cr Evans, seconded by Cr Armstrong, it was resolved to enquire what the Beautifying Association were prepared to find towards the cost. Cr Armstrong reported that Mr C. Jones was not available for the making of pipes and asked authority to employ Mr J. Millner, at 5/- per pipe. The Council agreed to this. Cr Armstrong drew the Council’s attention to the serious erosion by the river near Warren and Feeney’s old planing shed. As this is Harbour Board reserve, it was resolved to draw the Harbour Board’s attention to the matter.

HOKITIKA HARBOUR BOARD. (Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, May 26. A meeting of the Hokitika Harbour Board was held yesterday afternoon. The first business was the election of Chairman. The clerk called for nominations, and Mr G. A. Wood was re-elected. The Ross Borough wrote stating Mr W. E. Richards had been appointed their representative on the Board vice Mr Bruce, resigned. In the absence of the chairman, Mr Richards was voted to the chair. The question of the burning of the south wall a few weeks ago was brought up and it was resolved to ask the police to investigate the fire. The request of the West Coast Sawmills Ltd., for the surrender of the lease, where the old planing shed stood, was accepted. The action of the secretary in leasing the Board’s winch was approved.

It was resolved to forward a letter to the chairman (Mr G. A. Wood/ at present in the Westland Hospital), sympathising with him in his illness and wishing him a speedy recovery.
