AUCKLAND ENQUIRY. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 20. The Auckland Racing Club Committee heard evidence to-day regarding a protest by G. A. Reid, owner of Lucy Rose, against W. Schullum’s White Wings being declared winner of the Onslow Stakes, on the ground that Scholium did not train his horse himself, as declared. The Committee adjourned the hearing and decided to give its decision next week. FRESCO REHANDICAPPED. TIMARU, April 20. Fresco has been rehandicapped at 7.13 in the Timaru Cup. Wild Work, Rhondda, and King’s Jester, all 7.7, were omitted from the telegraphed weights in the Rosewill Hack. DRESS CIRCLE CASE. (Special to "Star.”) CHRISTCHURCH, April 21. The Racing Conference judges heard an appeal by Mr W. J. Burnett, owner of the horse Dress Circle, against the decision of the Auckland District Committee in disqualifying him for three years for corrupt practices and imposing a fine of £2O on him for employing an unlicensed trainer. The Secretary of the Conference presented a telegram received from Messrs Earl and Kent, solicitors, Auckland, reading as follows: —“Burnett will not prosecute. The appeal asks that the deposit be accepted in payment of the fine.” The judges being of opinion that the appellant should not at this late stage be allowed to abandon his appeal on these terms, and no appear ance being made by appellant, and having read the evidence taken before the Auckland District Committee, and being satisfied there was ample material for decision arrived at by that committee, have decided that the appeal should be dismissed and that the £2O deposited by appellant on lodging his appeal be forfeited. April 21. —Ashburton T.C. April 28.—Wellington T.C. GALLOPING. Acceptances for the South Canterbury J.C. are due on Monday. Don Jose is working in great style at Riccarton, and on Thursday easily defeated Thorndale and Assurance. Don Jose figures with 7.1 in the Timaru Cup. White Wings, the two-year-old sister to the New Zealand Derby winner, Agrion, displayed plenty of speed in the Nursery Handicap at Avondale, but, though she finished on well, she was making little impression on Te Atiawa at the end. White Wings, however, is susceptible to a great deal of improvement, and she is bound to pick up a two-year-old handicap before long. In the records of important and classic races there usually are a few fluke victories, and one or more winners fall below the real standard of the race. This does not apply to the Awapuni Gold Cup, however, for since its inception in 1915 it has been won only by good class horses. Chortle won in 1915, Desert Gold in each of the next three years, Sasanof in 1919 and 1921, and Amythas in the intervening year. Then followed Marqueteur, Thespian, Ballymena, Suggestion, Rapine and Commendation. To this good list, the latest winner, Star Stranger is a worthy addition. Lorient 11. who made his first appearance in the Dominion at the Avondale meeting on Wednesday is an English horse imported to New Zealand by Dr W. C. Ring. As a two-year-old he started on five ■ occasions for three wins. At the Leopardstown meeting he was third in the Foxtrot Two-year-old Plate and won the Paddock Two-year-old Plate at The Curragh. He won the Blake Plate of similar distance at Phoenix Park. He was unplaced in his next start, but annexed the Elevation Castle Plate, five furlongs, at Derby, with 9.0, and ran the distance in lmin 23-4 sec. As a three-year-old Lorient 11. failed to get into the money in his first five starts, but then won the Londesborough Welter Handicap, five furlongs, at York, carrying 7.8, running lmin, Isec. He was third in the Grinstead Welter, five furlongs at Lingfield, but won the Harewood Handicap, five furlongs and 152ydrs, at Doncaster, and the Croxteeth Plate, five furlongs, at Liverpool, with 7.3 in lmin 4 4-ssec.
