HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL (Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, March 24. The Hokitika Borough Council met last’evening, present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. J. King, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, G. Heinz, E. W. Heenan, A. C. Armstrong. Before commencement of business Cr. Evans expressed the congratulations and felicitations of the Council to the Mayor and Mayoress who that day were presented with a son and hinted that the auspicious event would be recognised in the orthodox ipanner later.

The Mayor expressed his thanks and pleasure at the felicitations received.

An invitation was received from the Kaiapoi Borough Council to attend the Diamond Jubilee on March 16. Messrs Baxter, Shrewsbury and Milliken, solicitors, Auckland, wrote forwarding documents respecting transfer of sections from Miss Ingall to Council. The Public Works Department, Wel- , linjjton forwarded copies of Motor . Vehicles Regulations. A committee, ’ consisting of Crs. Elcock, Duff, Arm- . strong and Teichelmann was. set up . to review the regulations. , P. Foley, Wellington, wrote inqulr- . ing name and address of suppliers of . Borough water mains.—lnformation - supplied. The Health Officer, Christchurch, wrote re the administration of Regulations by the local authorities. The Labour Department, Wellington, forwarded Gazette notice fixing half-holiday in Hokitika, as Wednesday. The Secretary Athletic Club wrote asking permission to use Cass., Square for sports, Council to have 10 per cent, of admission fees.—Request granted. Public' Trustee, Greymouth, Administrator in estate of John Coyle, forwarded application to transfer Muni- ' cipal Reserve No. part 492 to Mrs. B. Coyle.—Approved. The Clerk Westland Licensing Committee wrote forwarding letter from ! Under-Secretary for Justice, request - , ing that salary of Clerk of Committee be paid to March 31, yearly instead of to December 31, as heretofore. Municipal Association of N.Z., Wellington, forwarded details of proposal of an insurance scheme to provide work for the unemployed. District Medical Office, Christchurch recommended that Council grant permits to Mr. R. Thomas, Gibson’s Quay and Mr. T. Duff, Stafford Street, to instill septic tanks. at tlieir premises. Hokitika Beautifying Association, for warded donation of £lO, being the balance of £2O promised for the improvement of Cass Square.—Received with thanks. Rev. J. W. Hayward, Hokitika, apI plied for Council to tar-seal entrance to Presbyterian Church, Stafford Street, from gale to the church building, cost to be met by the applicant. —Request granted. The Reserves Committee made the following recommendations. which were approved: That the growth around Cass Square be cleared and that blackberry be dug out, the Beautifying Association to find £lO of the cost; that a man be employed for a week on Macandrew Square to clear it up for the holidays, and the main road at the cemetery be tar-sealed. Cr. Armstrong (Chairman of the P.W. Committee) read a report from that committee recommending that a crossing he put in Weld Street between Preston’s shop and Keller’s section in Revell Street; that Bealey Street dam from Weld Street to Gibson Quay be put in hand; Sewell Street from the Clock 'Power to the Quay; that a pipe drain in Stafford Street be constructed and that the private drains in Sale Street between Stafford and Weld Street be carried across to drain on the west side at the Council’s expense, the Council having decided to fill up the old drain. — These recommendations were adopted with the exception of the last where the owners are to pay half the cost. The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £335/14/11; payments £132/3/8. Cr. balance £551/19/S; Cr. loan a/c. £l6/13/3. Accounts amounting to £132/3/8 were passed for payment. Mr. Holmes (of Holmes and Son, Engineers) was present and stated that in company with Mr. Chesterman (foreman), and Mr. Heinz (councillor), he had proceeded to the lake that day and had made an examination of the popes along the route. Some were in a very good state, while some were in a bad way. Those covered up he was unable to see, but some will be uncovered to-day if weather permits. There was a leak or two in the reservoir which might* easily be repaired.
