HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, March 10. The Hokitika Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) and Crs. J. King, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, W. Jeffries, G. Heinz, E. AV. Heenan, A. C. Armstrong and E. Teichelmann. The Secretary of the New Zealand Municipal Association wrote, advising the Council that delegates to the annual conference and their wives and children will be granted railway tickets at holiday excursion rates. The Riccarton Borough Council wrote forwarding eight remits concerning the policy of the Highways Board, and asking support. The Chief Inspector of Explosives, Wellington, wrote advising the Council that new regulations in respect to explosives and dangerous goods were being gazetted, and that new license forms will be available about March 25.

An application from D. C. Streeter for a crossing from Revell Street into the right-of-way between S. J. Preston’s and the New Zealand Clothing Factory was referred ‘to the Public Works' Committee, with power to act. D. J. Davern and 31 others petitioned the Council to have the open drain on the east side of Sale Street converted into a pipe drain.— Referred to the P.W. Committee, to be done when opportunity arises. The Acting Town Clerk reported that the Council’s proportion of the expenses of the Westland Licensing District for the year ending December 31, 1927, is £l2‘is lid, and'enclosing a copy of statement of apportionment of expenses. Miss A. G. M. In gall, Epsom (Auckland) wrote, agreeing to make a free gift to the Council of sections 1391 and 1392, Hokitika. A copy of the President’s address to the forthcoming Municipal Council was received.

R. and AV. Holmes, engineers, Wellington, wrote, stating terms under which their engineers would visit Hokitika, and report on the Hokitika Borough’s water supply. The Hon. Secretary of the Hokitika Beautifying Association (Air J. Niven) forwarded a donation of £lO towards the improvemeht of-Cass Square, and promising another similar donation when funds are available. —Received with thanks.

An application from the same Society was received lor permission to use Cass Square on Saturday, March 17, for the purpose of holding a gala for raising funds, and asking that a holiday between 1 and 5 p.m. be declared on that day.--Request granted. hi order to expedite the work of tarsealing the Square it was resolved to empower the Chairman of the P.W. (’ommitl.ee (Cr A. C. Armstrong) to employ extra labour il he deemed it necessarv.

Accounts amounting to £164 9s 7d were presented and passed for payment.

The Borough Overseer (Mr F. Chesterman) reported on work carried out during the past month. 'l’he Abattoirs Manager (Mr J. Jarman) reported animals slaughtered lor Hie month of February, 29 cows, 16 heifers, 47 bullocks, 246 sheep, 122 iambs, 10 pigs, 18 calves; condemned 2 cows, 2 heilers. Fees received £67 13, compared with £7O Is 6d lor the same period last year. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Jeffries, Mr 11. G. F. Coles, who has been acting Town Clerk for a year, was appointed to the position oi Town Clerk on the same terms and conditions as he had been acting. He was also appointed as returning officer for Ihe Borough. Mr Coles thanked the Mayor and councillors for the appointment, which he looked upon as a. vote of confidence in him on his past work.
