HOTEL ON FIRE
DESTRUCTION AT DUNOLLIE A DOUBLE OUTBREAK Yesterday after-noon a fire was discovered in one of the bedrooms of the DunoHie Hotel. It is thought a cigarette stump had been dropped on the floor, and had gradually set the room alight, a hole being _ burnt through the wall into an adjoining room. There was no water supply available, and the fire was extinguished with water which had to be carried upstairs in buckets. Shortly after midnight fire broke out again, it being conjectured that a portion of the burning flooring had not been reached by witter in the afternoon. The whole building was soon, enveloped in flames, and nothing could be done to effectively check the fire, which continued its havoc till the hotel was demolished. The hotel which was owned by Messrs Kettle Bros, and Mandi’s Estate, was under the management of Mr F. Hawken. The insurances were with the North British and Mercantile Insurance Co. Ltd., on building £l9OO, on furniture £5OO, Yorkshire Co. furniture £2OO, stock £4OO, total £3OOO. The hotel was a two-storewed buildinc of about twenty-two rooms. Very little furniture or stock was saved. One piano was saved and two lost. BRISBANE BRIGADE STRIKE. BRISBANE, March 8. All the members of the Fire Brigade struck as a protest against the action of the. chief officer suspending a number of men for refusing duty. All the stations throughout the night were manned by skeleton staffs, but luckily there were no outbreaks of fire, as the number of men available to-day is quite inadequate. The men returned to work, the Arbitration Court having decided to intervene and hear the dispute.
