tion in that year, it being discovered that the law provided for the retirement of three councillors by ballot at the end of each August. Messrs Rae Magoffin, and Kilgour were the unlucky ones, and they contested the election with Messrs E. Masters, G. Simmons, and J. Heron, other candidates. Tho election took place on September 12, the voting being:—Messrs J. Kilgour 98, AV. Rac 93, E. Masters 82, D. Magoffin 58, G. Simmons 53, and J. Heron 48. On September 16, the Borough Council ' held its first meeting, the members being sworn in by Mr. Revell. On the resolution of Cr. Rae, seconded by Cr. Parkinson, it was decided unanimously that Mr. Edward Masters should be the first Mayor of Greymouth.
