St. Patrick’s Church was established by Rev. Father E. Royer in .1866, Rev. Father Walsh being his curate. The first school in Greymouth was conducted in connection with the church. In 1886, Rev. Father (afterwards Dean) Carew took charge of the parish, and at once undertook the task of preparing for the erection of the present church in Chapel Street, which was opened in the following year.
