BOOKMAKERS BROKE

AT TIN HARE MEETING.

; SYDNEY, February 13. An extraordinary state of affairs developed at the Greyhound Coursing Association’s meeting at the Epping racecourse on Saturday afternoon. Bookmakers had a particularly costly afternoon,, and several of them were compelled to ask for time to pay. Their request was granted by the officials, and the bookmakers announced that they would meet their obligations to-day.

Notwithstanding many counter-at-tractions, the attendance at the meetting was large, being officially estimated at 10,000. Race after race was won by well-backed dogs, and as the afternoon wore on, the finances and tempers of the bookmakers suffered considerably. In the nine races decided six favourites were successful, but the winners of the. other races also received solid support. It was fairly apparent that when betting commenced on the last race several bookmakers did not hold sufficient money to meet their obligations if a well-backed dog was successful. However, the favourite again won and a number of the ringmen were compelled to inform dismayed clients that they would have to wait until Monday for their money. Such a happening on a Sydney racecourse is unusual, and caused much unfavourable comment among patrons.
