GREY JUBILEE

CELEBRATIONS COMMENCED.

PERFECT WEATHER CONDITIONS.

Even the weather was in jubilant mood to-day, when the celebration of the Grey district’s Diamond Jubilee commenced, and the conditions were ideal. The rain earlier in the week cleared the atmosphere, bringing welcome relief from the previous humidity, and doing much good generally after the recent prolonged dry spell. During the past few days, the streets have gradually been assuming a carnival appearance, bunting and festoons of electric lights being used lavishly, while the business people are making special window displays, particularly of goods made in New Zealand.

The hotels could, in nearly every case, exhibit the “House full” sign, and most of them have, been called upon to provide extra accommodation in the way of “shakedowns.” In most private houses, also, thei’Q are one or more visitors, and a record crowd is assured for the Jubilee. The chief attraction to-day is the Greymouth Trotting Club s Jubilee meeting at Victoria Park, and the attendance will be augmented by the arrival of approximately 400 passengers by the special excursion tram from Christchurch.
