The Secretary-General of the League cabled the Hungarian Government that the destruction of the St. Gothard machine guns should be suspended. Count Bethlen replied that the guns must be rendered useless and sold, unless claimed by the legal owners. ’ 4 CHURCH BRAWLERS. LONDON, February 24. A thousand parishioners of Saint Cuthbert’s met at Darwen, and applauded Mr Moore, Vice-Chairman of the Parochial Council, when he said they had shown the Bishops they intended to cleanse the church of doctrines introduced against the people’s will. The only solution was Mr Laurie’s removal. The Bishop of Blackburn who was appointing a successor, had been given to un'iarstand the only sort of man with whom they would be satisfied. AMERICAN NAVY. WASHINGTON, February 24. The prospects of Congress authorising the House ■ Committee’s new naval programme appear good, as Chairman Madden, of the House Appropriations Committee, approved of it. His approval carries weight, clue to his leadership of the group consistently opposing a large navy. A second Bill covering the personnel and other -expenses must be prepared later. In the Commons, Mr Amery presenting th(> supplementary estimate of £525,009 sterling, on account of damage to property of ex-servicemen in Ireland, pointed out that the Government had already paid out about eight mill.ions in compensation with respect to injuries suffered before the truce. The total awards of both Governments to the Irish loyalists before and since the truce amounted to ten millions. The Irish Grants Committee was investigating urgent cases of hardship. It was hoped the necessity for a further grant would not arise, but the subject could be re-opened.
