Jan. 31, Feb. I.—Nelson T.C. 1 GALLOPING. J The racehorse, Motion, owned by Mr 1 E. W. Spencer, President of the Reefton Jockey Club, was doing a workout yesterday on the Reefton course, 1 when the horse broke its fetlock, and was later destroyed. The NassauQuotation mare was a great disappointment as : a rader. .The well-known Reef ton sportsman, Mr F. Keating, has leased Flaming Ray c with a right to purchase. Flaming Ray, t by Clarenceaux—Formnal is a six-year- t old mare endowed with a useful turn \ of speed over a mile, and should prove a good sort at Coast meetings. She won at the . Greymouth Summer meeting, repeating her performance of the • previous year at the. same meeting in 1J finishing second in the President’s 0 Handicap on the third day and then ? winning- the Ahaura Welter Handicap 11 later in the day; Last season she s started 23 times for 3 wins, 2 seconds, and a third. She is a slow horse to o strike form, but at her best is useful s and may prove a happy purchase to g Mr Keating. h Erin Go Bragh is striding out freely h on the Omoto track in preparation for j his coming engagements at the Wei- e lington meeting. (

TROTTING. Mr W. Shield’s trotter, Repute, is gradually coming to her speed. At the South Wairarapa Club’s meeting at Christmas time she showed improvement in her efforts and with more race experience she may become a useful trotter, H. Frost has her going well in her work. The locally owned Royal Audubon has been raced both as a trotter and a pacer. He is now being worked at the latter gait. A Christchurch writer Says he does not seem destined to be a big success and probably he would do better if he were raced without hopples. Following on Golden Spray’s success on the Coast, several would-be buyers are seeking after this daughter of Great Audubon. Recently a big price was quoted, but there was no business. It is interesting to recall'that Gold Rush, who won at Reefton, and revealed great prbmise, is from Fanny Dillon, a,mare who won many races on the Coast. A Christchurch writer credits Vesuvius with being the best maiden seen out this season. Vesuvius has been handicapped on 4.41 at Forbury Park.

The first, of the Wracks to sport silk wd*s seen out at Westport, and made a successful debut. The youngster is a two-year-old from a wellknown Buller mare, Bonnie Thorpe, who was bought in the Kaikoura district by the young Westport reinsman, Claude Walshe. The grey daughter of Lord Althorpe proved a good investment and won a fair amount of stake money on the Coast. She was particularly successful with the weight on top and soon made her. way to the rear of handicaps. Young Walshe then decided to breed from the grey and- she accordingly visited Christchurch. The result of the union was Bonny Wrack, and the success of the two-year-old will be indeed gratifying to the q,wner. The total faxes paid by the Greymouth Trotting Club arising out of its Summer meeting (Jan. 5) were £948 14s 2d, comprising: Totalisator Tax £299 2s, Dividend Tax £538 Bs, Stake Tax £7l, Amusement Tax £4O 4s 2d.
