CROQUET. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Aenociatlon.) MELBOURNE, January 16. At Croquet, Australia won the Shield presented by Macßobertson, Ltd. Three test matches were played between England and Australia, England winning the first, Australia the secoir, while the third was drawn Australia won nine matches, twenty games, 765 points; England nine matches, nineteen games, 721 points. The English team leaves Sydney on Friday for New Zealand. YACHTING. AUCKLAND, January 14. , The first race in the fourth annual contest for the Cornwall Cup will be held in Waitemata Harbour to-morrow afternoon. An informal race between visiting i crews took place this morning, Otago finishing 20 seconds ahead of Tauranga; then came Canterbury, Whangarei and Hawke’s Bay. Auckland, Manukau and Wellington did not start. The annual conference of the Cornwall Cup delegates was held to-day. A remit from the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association, that the conditions of the contest be altered to allow each competing province to provide and sail its own boat, was defeated, ( Mr. Y. F. Bewley (Otago) being the only one voting for it.
