HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, January 14. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs J. King, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, W. Jeffries, G. Heinz, E. W. Heenan and A C. Armstrong. A letter was received from the Hokitika Fire Brigade, stating that the engine was unable to pump water from the well at the corner of Stafford and Revell streets. —Referred to the P.W. Committee to deal with. Cr Heinz moved that the well in front of the Town Hall be attended to at the same time, which was carried. The P.W. Department wrote asking for report on cost of maintenance of streets, etc. —Attended to. J. Cutbush applied for his annual leave, which was granted.. The N.Z. Refrigerating Co. reported one cattle and 49 sheep had been sent to Hokitika, and enclosing £2 14s fees. ' Mrs J. Coyle and family wrote, thanking the Council for letter of sympathy. The Blackball Picnic Committee wrote asking for- the use of Cass-Square on January 20 for annual picnic.— Granted. Feron and Son' wrote complaining of the Inspector condemning fish and intimating that if it continued the firm would cut out Hokitika. The custodian of . the Town Clock (Mr R. Lynn) wrote asking for new ladder for clock, as the old ladder' was unsafe. —To be attended to. The application of W. Gaylor (Borough Inspector) for annual holiday was granted. The Kanieri Electric Ltd. wrote thanking the Council for attending to street opposite their office. An application from Mr H. Houston for an auctioneer’s license was granted. J. E. .Ward wrote complaining of the growth of gorse near her residence, Cemetery Hill. —Referred to the Reserves Committee to act. The Health Department wrote reporting a case of scarlet fever in the town, and giving instructions. The sanitary contractor wrote stating a new vehicle was required and making suggestions to the Council. —Held over till nest meeting for consideration. The Chairman of the Public Works Committee reported on recommendations for various works. —After consideration these were adopted. The Overseer (Mr F. Chesterman) reported on work carried out by the Borough staff during the month. The manager of the Abattoirs (Mr J. Jarman) reported: Animals• slaughtered during the month : Nineteen cows, 21 heifers, 46 bullocks, 245 sheep, 207 lambs, 11 pigs, 5 calves. Condemned : Three cows, one bullock. Fees received £7l 3s 3d. Same month last year £7B 16s.

The Borough Treasurer’s report showed receipts £433 5s fid ; payments £663 12s 8d; credit £799 17s Id;,Or. Loan Account £69 16s.

Accounts as. presented amounting to £663 12s Bd, were passed for payment.

CT Evans, by notice, moved (1) That estimates be obtained for the completion of tar-sealing of the paths on Cass Square. —Carried. (2) That in view of the increased subsidy received from the petrol tax the Overseer’ prepare an estimate of the cost of re-conditioning and tar-sealing of the main, highway through the Borough—Fitzherbert Street and Stafford Street. —Carried. (3) That estimates be obtained of the cost of levelling and? forming the full width of Hampden Street, with provision for metalling same so as to provide on special days for two-way traffic, by limiting traffic to the left, and by direct control and checking speed reduce the liability to motor accidents to a minimum.—Seconded by Cr Jeffries and supported also by Cr Duff. The Mayor and Crs Elcock and Heinz did not think such a large expenditure was warranted. The , motion was carried. The matter of selecting a. delegate to attend the Municipal Conference to be held in Nelson nnext March was left with the Mayor. On the motion of Cr Jeffries, it was resolved to contract with the Hokitika Gas Co. for the supply of 2000 gallons or more of tar. Cr Jeffries roundly condemned the action of some person.' or persons in depositing rubbish on the beach at the end of Weld Street. Such people, he said, had no civic pride. The funeral of the late Miss Marcella A. McDonald took place on Thursday afternoon, and was attended by numerous friends. A large nftmber of wreaths and other floral tributes were sent by sympathisers. The Rev. Knowles-Smith conducted the burial service. Congratulations to Master Allan Shannon, second son of Mr and Mrs W. IT. Shannon, of Revell Street, in having qualified for the Junior National Scholarship. Cass Square presented the appearance as if a gala was in progress on Thursday evening, when the Municipal Band played a programme there. Several hundred people were present. The newly-mown hay was a source of fun for the children.
