VALEDICTORY

MRS. J. COWAN. Almost every resident of Roto Manu assembled at the} residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. Baty on Monday evening last, for the purpose of saying farewell to Mrs. J. Cowan, who is leaving the district and will‘in future reside at Marton. Mr. J. Ryan, who presided, said that Mrs. Cowan, during the twelve years she had liver amongst them, had gained the respect and esteem of every person ip the district ,and hex* departure was sincerely regretted. What wouK be Roto Manu’s loss would be MPrton’s gain. Mr. H. Hodgkinson, on behalf of the residents, presented Mrs. Cowan with a Houlton salad set. Messrs -J. Baty, W. Cowan, H. Haskell, J. Graham and Mr. Seddon, M.P., al spoke in glowing terms of the departing guest. Mr. G. Cow’an, on behalf of his mother, suitably Replied, thanking all foi’ the nice present and the kind words spoken. During the evening songs were given by Misses Graham and Palmer, Mrs. Ryan and Rothery, also Mr. Seddon, P. B. Thompson, J. Graham, and recitations by Mrs. Graham, Mr. H. Haskell, A. Rothqry and G. Gibson. On the motion of Mr v Seddon, a hearty vote of thanks was carried by acclamation to the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Baty. The singing of Auld Lang Syne brought a very pleasant evening to a close.
