ALLEGED THEFT

EX-ROA RESIDENT CHARGED. An instance of what is sometimes described as the “long arm of the law” was illustrated at the Greymouth Court to-day, when an ex-resident of Roa was charged with theft, nearly four years after the date of the alleged offence. He was John James McGifford, aged 27, who was arrested at Lyttelton on Monday, and remanded in custody to appear at Greymouth, the charge being that at Roa, on May 30, 1924, he stole £9/1/2 in money, the property of Edward Joseph Moore. Senior-Sergeant C. E. . Roach applied for a remand, and this was granted by Mr F. W. Shallcrass, J.P. The case will be dealt with by Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., to-morrow or Mon-i day.
