£35,000 TREASURE

SPIRITUALIST’S BIG TASK. The Aliwal North Provincial Council recently granted Mr H. Bothnia, a Johannesburg spiritualist, permission to search for buried treasure in the Myburgh outspan between Allwal and Burghersdop, in South Africa. Mr Bothnia told the council a strange story. He said he heard that ghosts haunted this lonely spot, and, being a spiritualist, he visited it, and with great difficulty, established touch with the familiar of the place. This, he said, was the spirit of a man killed in the South African War, during which he had stolen £35,000 and buried it in the outspan. The spirit could not rest until the treasure was unearthed and handed over to two poverty-stricken brothers. Two natives had previously unearthed the treasure, and were about to remove it when the spirit made itself visible in a frightful shape, forced the men to cover up the money, and scared them off. The spirit implored Mr Bothma to find the hoard and divide it between the brothers present. The lessee of the outspan, named Smit, declares that a month ago he found a hole dug in it, which his native servant said was the work of two strangers, who arrived at Myburgh at. night and spent hours prowling around.
