The Governor-General, who is now convalescent, Will leave Wellington with Her Excellency on Tuesday evening- next, for a short stay at Pelorous Sound. Their Excellencies will return to Wellington immediately before Christmas. The garden party for which invitations were issued by Their Excellencies, for November 22, but which had to be postponed on account of the Governor-General’s illness, will now be held at Government House, Wellington, on Tuesday, January 10. Their Excellencies, therefore, ask that the recipients of cards of invitation for' the former date will kindly regard them as holding good for January .10.

' Detective Murch returned to Greymouth last night, after an official visit to Murchison.

Mrs E. Hignett and Miss Joyce Hignett, who have, been visiting Greymouth, returned to-day to ChristChurch.

Miss Belle Renaut, who took part in the Ladies’ Musical Society’s concert on Thursday, returned to-day to Christchurch.

A cablegram from London stated that the New Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons include Dr W. H. Renner and Dr J. Fitzsimmons, of Otago.

Mr F. J. T. Grigg, M.Sc., Government Analyst for Canterbury and Westland, has been elected a Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain, and Ireland.

A cablegram from Tokio stated that General Yamanashi, ex-Minister of War, has been appointed Governor of Korea, replacing Viscount Saito (resigned).

A Sydney cablegram stated that Mr W. Webster had been elected President of the Australian Labour Party, in succession to Mr A. MacPherson, who has been appointed organising secretary to the Party.

Mr H. Burleigh, managing director of the Wilton Furnace and Coal Coy., Auckland, is visiting Greymouth. He is motoring to Hokitika this afternoon, returning on Monday, leaving for Christchurch on Wednesday.

A London cablegram stated that the Rev. Herbert Hyde did not desire to discuss his rejection of an invitation which he received to accept the Anglican Bishopric of Northwest Australia. He says that he is returning to his old position at Perth.

Mrs F. H. Denton and Nurse Spring left to-day for Christchurch, where they will attend the Plunket Society’s Conference on Monday. During Nurse Spring’s absence, Mrs C. Turner, Kilgour Road, an ex-Plunket Nurse, will’ attend at the Plunket rooms.

Mr W. T. Foster, M.A., B. Litt., at \ present Inspector of Secondary i Schools, has been appointed principal of the Napier Boys’ High School in succession to Mr W. A. Armour, who has been appointed to Wellington College. There were over 30 applications for the position. —Press Association.

Messrs S. E. Fay, Operating and Equipment Officer N.Z. Railways, and W. Flanagan, Assistant Loco Inspector, Wellington, left this morning for Christchurch, motoring to Otira, and taking the goods train to Springfield, from thence continuing their journey by motor.

The funeral of the late Mr Charles Anderson, of Blackball, took place yesterday afternoon at Blackball. The deceased for about twelve years had been the County roadman for the district between Blackball and Moonlight. The County Council was repre seated at the funeral by Messrs J. P Irvine, J. Higgins and M. Keating.

Captain J. S. M. Ritchie, who until recently was in command of the H.M.S. Dunedin, and whose term of service on the New Zealand naval station has just expired, has received the appointment of naval attache at the British Embassy at Washington. Captain Ritchie will leave Auckland on December 20 by the Aorangi, en route for England, where he is under orders to report at the Admiralty about 'the end of January.

The funeral of the late Mr R ; . H. Richmond took place yesterday at Christchurch (telegraphed our correspondent). There was a large attendance, most parts of the Dominion being represented. Scores of telegrams and beautiful wreaths, testifying respect, etc., were received. Among‘the floral tributes were from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Canterbury, District Grand Lodge of Westland and Nelson, N.Z. Royal Arch Chapters various West Coast Lodges, Richmond and Reynolds, Ltd. staff, Dalgety and Co.’s staff, Dental and Medical Supply Coy., and many others from personal friends. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev.'Archdeacon Haggitt. The Masonic Service was conducted by the Grand Chaplain ' (N.Z.).

Miss Mary BellariiS'’ was on Thursday evening tendered a farewell social by the .members of the Sodality of the Children of Mary at St. Columba Hall, in view of her approaching marriage, there being a very large gathering of members. Several presentations were made to Miss Bellamy by the Sodality, and in handing her the gifts, Rev. Father Long paid her a high tribute as an exemplary and energetic office-bearer, she having been for several terms president and secretary, and on behalf of the members extended their united good wishes for her future happiness and prosperity. His remarks were endorsed by Rev. Fathers Gregory, Quinn and Holohan. Miss Bellamy wil be married at St. Patrick’s Church on Monday, December 26, at 8.30 a.m.
