TRADE IN BUSH FERNS
• A-LITTLE-KNOWN INDUSTRY. SYDNEY, November 17. The big trade done with foreign countries in Australian bush fern suggests possibilities for New Zealand in the same way. . .. . The ferns are, for instance, used to decorate the residence of the King of Siam. . Ships with Asiatic names take ferns from our shores in tens of thousands. A case ifi the -District Court
the other day provided interesting sidelights on the trade. Beautiful ferns, artificially coloured in refreshing greens, ornamented the Bench. It seemed the Judge had been showered with floral tributes. In the hearing it was stated that in less than one month more than 73,000 Australian ferns had been shipped abroad. On June 15, the Chitral took 19,500, and on June 25 the Orvieto took 19,600. The Cathay recently took 26,500. Apparently the fern is balanced and artificially coloured. In-this State it is'a valauble article of commerce. |
