HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

HOKITIKA, November 26.

The meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening. Present: Crs. Teichelmann, Jas. King; A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, G. Heinz, E. W. Heenan, A. C. Armstrong. In the absence of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Cr. Teichelmann was voted to the chair.

The Greymouth Watersiders wrote asking for use of Cass Square on January 21, for their annual picnic.—Request granted. The Wanganui City Council wrote asking to support a motion objecting to the 4d tax on petrol and asking that 2d be the amount.

Cr. D. J. Evans moved that in the interest of the ratepayers at large, this Council cannot support the request. Seconded by Cr. Armstrong. Cr. Duff could not support the motion. He was afraid another department would be set up and the tax would be swallowed up by highly-paid officials. The motion was carried.

The Public Works Department, Wellington, wrote asking for opinions re the new motor regulations.—To be passed on to the Automobile Association for consideration.

The Hospital Board wrote notifying the Council that the Board had purchased the property of Mrs Halliday as a nursing home. —No objections. The Health Inspector wrote objecting to a wooden drain in Livingstone Street. —No action taken.

Mr A. Cowrie wrote asking for a gully trap at the corner near Post Office Hotel. —Referred to Public Works Committee to act.

Mrs G. Harcourt wrote complaining of the condition of a drain at the corner of Brittan and Hampden Streets. —Referred to Public Works Committee.

The Municipal Band wrote asking for a light to be placed on Cass Squ'are for the purpose of giving concerts during the summer months. — Referred to Town Clerk to find cost. The matter of’ a camp in — Street find on Cemetery Hill is also to be reported , on. A request by Mr Ridlands to have a few loads of gravel put on the road opposite his residents was approved.

A request from the Mayor of Greymouth for the Council to co-operate in the Greymouth Jubilee celebrations was received, and it was resolved to invite the Mayor of Greymouth and the Jubilee committee to attend a meeting in the Hospital Board’s room on Monday night, when the matter can be discussed.

Cr. Armstrong reported that a dray had been purchased from C. Berendt for £24.—Action approved. Accounts amounting to £lO4/14/2 were passed for payment. Cr. Heenan referred to the necessity for repairs to the watchman’s tower and lightning, conductor. Tenders for painting the pavilion on Cass Square were, received as follows: Thomas Hear, £46/10/-; Scott and Co., £43/12/8; C. Fowler, £3O; Hausmann Bros., £26/10/-; Theo. Lynch, £4B/12/6; A. Howe, £3B/16/-. The tender of Hausmann Bros, was accepted.

The manager of the abattoirs reported animals slauntered last month:—l3 cows, 26 heifers, 51 bullocks, 218 sheep 11 lambs, 11 pigs, 7 calves. Fees received £54/4/6; same month last year, £54/12/6. The overseer’s report dealing with work carried out was heard and received.

The town rubbish dump was discussed at length and finally it was resolved that it be put in order and the Town Clerk and Inspector to see that the instructions are carried out. Cr. Elcock asked that Councillors be given a precis of correspondence some days before each meeting in order that they may have some knowledge of the subjects to be discussed.
