WHITEBAITERS’ NET.

DUNEDIN PROSECUTION. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, October 28. Leslie Crossan, Richard Crossan, John Hardy, ‘ Duncan Mcßae, Gordon Mcßae, Donald Cameron, and Benjamin Overton to-day pleaded not guilty to a charge of using a set net for catching whitebait at the Taieri Mouth. Constable Southgate described the nets. He admitted that he himself had been under the impression that no offence had been committed, so far as the class of net was concerned. Witness was sure the defendants had acted honestly. The Magistrate pointed out that a minimum penalty of £1 was provided for, and suggested that the charges against Leslie Crossan, Hardy and the Mcßae’s be withdrawn. ' Inspector Pellett agreed to this, stating that the object of the prosecution was to stop the practice in which the defendants had been indulging. Cameron, whose case was regarded as a flagrant one, was fined 26/-, with costs 10/-, the Magistrate warning all the defendants against committing any breach of the Act.
