HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, October 29. A meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last night. Present: Crs W. Jeffries (Deputy-Mayor, in the chair), J. King, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, E. Teichelmann, E. W. Heenan, and A. C. Armstrong. The Deputy-Mayor apologised for the absence of the Mayor and Cr Heinz. Cr Heenan asked that the letter to the Scenic Board be read. This having been done, ha, disagreed with the clause limiting the number of boatsheds as those at present. The application of the Abattoirs Manager for his annual holiday was granted. The Prime Minister wrote re Armistice Day, November 11. —To be observed as in previous years. The District Manager of the Tourist Department, Auckland, advised receipt of one large photograph of Hokitika ,which was received with the glass broken, and asking whether the glass is to be replaced at the Council’s expense. —The Borough to have glass replaced. Mr H. W. .G. Park asked to have a footpath leading to his residence gravelled and for water tables to be cleaned. —Referred to Works Committee to deal with.

Society of Carpenters and Joiners (Greymouth branch) forwarded a reminder that workmen engaged in demolishing old works are entitled to threepence extra per hour as “dust money.” The Collector of Customs, Hokitika, wrote intimating that in regard to the tar distillation plant, if the worm of the still is removed and replaced by a straight escape pipe, the plant will not be regarded as a still. Mr 11. M. Coulson, Hokitika, wrote conveying his grateful appreciation of the Council’s motion of sympathy. The Oppenheimer Casing Company wrote intimating that they are compiling a schedule of yearly killings of all New Zealand municipal abattoirs, and asking to be furnished with the particulars of the actual killings at the Hokitika Abattoirs for the period beginning October 1, 1926, to September 30, 1927, for sheep, lambs, and cattle, and further that if he desired a copy of the record will be furnished when completed. Mr Robert Adamson, Upper Riccarton, wrote relinquishing Reserve No. 571. —Cancelled. Mr F. W. Chestennan, Borough foreman, wrote applying for annual holidays, beginning on November 5. —• Application granted. The lion. Secretary of the Beautifying Association, Hokitika, wrote forwarding donation of £l5 15/ towards expense of improvements recently recommended in Cass Square. —Received with thanks. Cr. Armstrong (Chairman of the PW. Committee) read several recommendations for the carrying out of work, all of which were duly approved.

The Treasurer reported: Receipts £1371 10s lOd, payments £336 Us 2d, credit £1532 19s 3d, Credit Loan Account £69 16s. The matter of finding a suitable locality for a rubbish dump was left with the Town Clerk and Borough Inspector. Au estimate of £34 10s, for constructing shutters for the pavilion in Cass Square aud repairing same, was received from Mr. D. Stevenson. It was resolved that Mr. Stevenson be asked to proceed with the work. It was resolved that extra labour be employed to clean up the streets before Christmas.

It was also resolved that specifications for the painting of Cass Square pavilion and tea house be prepared and tenders called for next meeting. At the request of the Chairman of the P.W. Committee, the Town Clerk read out the credit balances in connection with various accounts. It was decided that the special water committee meet the representative of a pipe manufacturing company on Monday next. It was decided that during the summer months the Finance Committee meet at 7.30 and the Council at 8 p.m. „ '
