COMMUNISTS’ RAID

A LITHUNIAN VENTURE. (“Times” Service.) LONDON, September 11. The “Times’s” Riga correspondent says: With sixty supporters, a Lithunian ex-staff officer, Captain Maijus, who was recently cashiered on account of his Communist activities, made a surprise attack on the police headquarters at Taurage, liberating the prisoners, who assisted in a raid on the local bank, seizing bundles of Lithunian and American notes. They also entered other Government establishments, but -were dispersed on the arrival of the military from Memel. Shots were exchanged, two raiders being killed. A TEMPORARY SUCCESS. RIGA, Sept. 11. The Lithuanian revolt was organised by Leftists with- the object of overthrowing the Government. The town of Tauronggen, between Riga and Tilsit, as well as other small towns and villages were fourteen hours in the hands of rebels, who disarmed the police, occupied barracks, and stations and summoned other towns to join them. The Government proclaimed a state of war, and lushed troops from Kovno and Kreinel and instituted a press censorship. The prompt action resulted in the revolt being suppressed. It is reported that many were killed or wounded. The leader, Maijus, -was recently expelled from the army. 01-1161* prominent insurgents escaped.
