HUMAN CUDGEL

NEGRO FELLS SQUAD OF POLICE. A giant negro wanted for murdpr, was the cause of one of the most thrilling police sensations New York has known for years. He broke out of gaol, fought two police squads, disabled six of the officers, and set up a fierce street fight until he was felled by a loaded “night stick” wielded by one of the patrolmen. When the police first went to apprehend Ollie J. King, negro, they were warned that he was likely to prove dangerous. A posse of detectives surprised him at his lodgings, and by quick handcuffing, managed to get him away before he had much chance of- being troublesome. King is a giant of a. negro.. Tie. is only twenty-six, but stands 6ft. 3in in his stockings, and weighs 220 lb. When the detectives got their man to the gaol they placed him in a special cell kept for refractory prisoners, but he escaped. With his back to a wall he fought six police for nearly half an hour. Finally he picked up one bodily and hurled him with tremendous force at the others. The negro then served each of the policeman who approached • him in the same way. When he had disabled the whole of the squad he ran out into the street again. Once in the open he ran right into the arms of a reserve squad who had come to the rescue of their comrades. There followed another tremendous fight. The negro used feet and fists, and again the trick of swinging a policeman off his feet and using him to fell attackers. Finally, he went down like a log from a blow on the back of his skull with a night stick. He is now being kept in the manacles and in a steel and concrete cell, and has also been accorded a very special and large guard, who do not let their eyes leave him for a moment.
